SOLIDARITY WITH HAITI
COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: HAITIAN BRIDGE ALLIANCE |
|
|
 |
Haitian Bridge Alliance (HBA), also known as "The Bridge," is a collective of organizations & community activists who have come together to help build a solid infrastructure for a Haitian community and assist all Black Immigrants. Although HBA is based in California, they have been active and on the ground supporting Haitians at the U.S.-Mexico border.
In response to the anti-Blackness that Haitians are experiencing at the U.S.-Mexico border and with the deportation flights to Haiti, they put together an action toolkit with resources and messaging to help amplify their efforts. To date, at least 67 expulsion flights have departed to Haiti with over 7100 people. You can learn more about their work to stop the deportations and how to support their efforts here.
*Additionally, HBA is looking for attorneys or groups that are able to assist Haitians in detention. If you or anyone you know is interested or able to assist, please put your contact information in this shared doc.
For other Haitian-led organizations active in Texas, check out:

New Report: Understanding the Impact of COVID-19 on Diverse Populations
The New American Economy has released the findings of a five-city COVID-19 Community Impact Survey designed to gather insights directly from Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) and immigrant residents about the impact of COVID-19 on their economic and social well-being and sense of belonging. The survey effort, funded by the Walmart Foundation, reached more than 2,100 residents across the cities of Atlanta, Austin, Denver, Louisville, and Tulsa.
A huge thank you to our community partners who supported our survey efforts - Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs, Caritas, El Buen Samaritano, and Refugee Services of Texas. Read the report here and stay tuned for a separate forthcoming report that will detail findings that are specific to Austin. |

- In Al Otro Lado v. Mayorkas, a judge recently struck down the "metering" policy, which systematically denied asylum seekers access to the asylum process at ports of entry. Metering at the border began in 2016 as a reaction to an increase in the number of Haitian asylum seekers approaching the San Ysidro/San Diego Port of Entry to seek asylum.
- During its second special session, the Texas lege passed HB9, which will provide funding to continue Operation Lone Star and increase the militarization of the border.
- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the automatic extension of TPS designations for El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, Sudan, Honduras, and Nepal.
- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that effective Oct. 1, 2021, applicants subject to the immigration medical examination must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before the civil surgeon can complete an immigration medical examination and sign Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record.
- DHS announced its strategy to address the Haitian migrants at Del Rio. This includes mass deportations to Haiti, despite the assassination of its president in July and the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in August.
- The Biden administration will set the refugee admissions cap for FY22 at 125,000. This is a significant increase from the cap of 62,500 for FY21.
- DHS announces intention to issue new memo terminating the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP). The program forced tens of thousands of people, including families and children, seeking asylum to face dangerous conditions as they awaited their U.S. asylum hearing in court.
- Greyhound must stop allowing warrantless and suspicionless immigration sweeps and pay $2.2M to settle Attorney General Bob Ferguson's lawsuit.
- Secretary Mayorkas has announced new immigration enforcement priorities that will take effect starting November 29, 2021. Check out this FAQ from the National Immigration Project for more insight into the priorities.
- DHS published a proposed federal regulation announcing its intent to codify Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Learn more about what this could mean here. You can submit a comment about the new DACA proposal here.
