As the temperatures drop, it's crucial to know where to find warming stations in Austin. Stay warm and safe this winter by checking our interactive map for real-time updates on available warming stations.


Cold weather shelters will open overnight tonight, Monday, January 15. Go to One Texas Center (OTC), 505 Barton Springs Road from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. to register for overnight shelter.

Bus routes to the OTC are lines: 1, 7, 10, 20, 30, 105, 142, 801.

Anyone seeking a cold weather shelter & does not have the means to pay the fare will still be given a ride.

This week and next (Jan 11-17) Attention: Temperatures will drop into the low 30's Friday & Satureday, below 20 degrees Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Take action now. Check for shelter status (likely to continue Sat-Tues) ONE TEXAS CENTER 505 Barton Springs Road, 5pm-8pm. For activation status: 512-927-5055. Bus lines for ONE TEXAS CENTER:  1, 7, 10, 20, 30, 105, 142, 801. General Info: Cap metro buses will not require a fare during shelter activation if you tell them you are going to intake. CAP METRO PICKUP AVAILABLE TILL MIDNIGHT. CALL 311. EXPECT TO WAIT. 3 Libraries will open following facilities on Sunday and Monday as warming centers from 9am to 6pm. Thos locations are: Little Walnut Creek Branch 512-974-9860 W. Rundberg Ln., Ruiz Branch 512-974-7500 1600 Grove Bld., Terrazas Branch 512-974-3625 1105 E. Cesar Chavez. The Central Library (710 W. Cesar Chavez St.) will open as a Warming Center early on Tuesday from 6am to 9am. Normal business hours will resume at 9am. Have questions about this information? 🔔 To Stay Informed:


✅ To be prepared:

  • Keep your water shutoff cleared and accessible
  • Keep pipes insulated if possible. Pipes can also be kept warm by leaving cabinet doors open
  • Disconnect any outdoor hoses and turn off automatic sprinklers
  • Drip one faucet to prevent freezing
  • If needed, get your heater serviced ASAP
  • Do NOT use kerosene/gas heaters, in a closed environment
  • Do NOT use your stovetop or oven as a heater
  • Make sure your smoke detector works and has backup batteries. Austin Fire Department provides free smoke detectors
  • If using a fireplace, make sure to use proper firewood
  • If using a fireplace, do not restrict chimney airflow
  • Have a 7-day supply of food & water
  • Prepare a go-bag with emergency supplies
  • Establish a line of communication w/ your neighbors
  • Do not drive unless needed
  • If you must drive, check road conditions
  • If you must drive, share your route and location with a friend
  • Report traffic sign outages to 311 - treat malfunctioning signs as a 4-way stop


🌡️ Warming Centers:

  • Austin Public Library & Austin Parks and Recreation Department facilities are currently serving as warming centers
  • Though most City facilities will be closed on Monday, 1/15, due to the MLK Jr Holiday, three libraries (Little Walnut Creek, Ruiz, & Terrazas branches) will serve as warming centers 9 AM - 6 PM
CapMetro Service Alert
 
Due to the expected weather conditions, please see below for service on Monday, January 15:
  • All #CapMetro services will begin at 9 a.m.
  • We will operate Saturday-level service in observance of MLK Jr. Day
  • Rail will not operate
