Forgotten Books of the Bible Preaching Series:

“Esther” or “The ‘National Lampoon’ Edition”

This Sunday, we will begin exploring the last of the five Jewish Festival Scrolls. We end the series with a tragicomic, satirical sendup of unchecked power and corruption. Exaggeration and comedy are used to full effect in the book of Esther, the story of a young Jewish woman living under Persian rule.

This Sunday, we will focus on the first chapter, a chapter by the way, that does not even mention Esther. Instead, we are told the story of Persian King Ahasuerus, Queen Vashti, and the power of “No.”

This story is traditionally read during the Jewish Festival of Purim, a day marked by costumes, masks, gift giving, and revelry! It is another book that makes no mention of God. However, one can read between the lines to notice the divine courage and holy imagination that compels our female protagonists to act boldly.

Thank you again to Steve Delamarter and Michael Gross, who will serve as our technical host and worship leader for this Sunday. And thank you to Karlene Hart, who will lead the prayers.

May we also be filled with divine courage and holy imagination!

GOD’S WORK      -      OUR HANDS
 LWR PORTLAND FALL 2020 INGATHERING
 CANCELLED

Due to safety concerns because of COVID 19, the Portland Lutheran World Relief fall InGathering for Baby Care Kits and other kits has been canceled. The volunteer leaders are hopeful that they can gather items in May 2021.

In an interesting timing twist, Pass It On, the consignment sale where many ChristChurch folks pick up Baby Care Kit items, is having an August sale. If you would like to shop that sale and hold items for the spring you are welcome to. Details are below:

PASS IT ON Sale
August 21, 22, 23 AND 28, 29, 30!
We know your kids are growing and they don’t just need clothes, they also need toys to play with, books to read, and all sorts of other things! Pass It On is here for you!
Join us at the former Bales Thriftway in Cedar Mills
Bigger building = more space to spread out! Great for social distancing!
We negotiated a longer rent so we can also spread the sale out over more days!
Full information on the sale can be found here.

Continuing through August, ChristChurch is collecting donations to the nonprofit organization PERIOD, whom we have helped in past years with donations of feminine hygiene products for care packages. PERIOD helps those who are in need of feminine hygiene products, and do not have access to them or cannot afford them. This is an issue in many countries across the world, but also in our own community.

Where are the supplies going?
These items are needed in PERIOD’s Seattle, Washington chapter. They are being distributed to those in need, as well as those helping with the pandemic and Northwest People's Aid, which is supporting people of color in the Seattle area.

3 ways to donate:
1) There is a box on our doorstep for donations. Leave items there. Our address is 1154 NE Alexandria St., Hillsboro OR, 97124.

2) If you have supplies to be donated to PERIOD, email me and let me know. Then leave the supplies on your doorstep, and I will pick them up.

3) Alternately, if you would like to order supplies online, you can have the package shipped to our house.
Hopefully, this will make it easier to donate supplies.

Once the collection is over, I will deliver the supplies to PERIOD, so they will make it to the Seattle chapter and those who are in need of these supplies.

Thank you all for your continued support and donations! If you have questions please feel free to reach out to me directly via email.

Pandemic Emergency Economic Relief (PEER)

In the midst of this pandemic, many families who were already marginalized and pressured are now facing acute economic and food insecurity.  At the same time, most of us are feeling isolated and longing to act.  What if we could GROW connection during this time and ACT together to relieve pressure in our communities?

How it works:

ChristChurch has received a $500 matching gift grant from the Oregon Synod (ELCA). We are combining that with funds dollars from our benevolence fund and the pastor’s compassion fund for a total of $2,000. We will then buy grocery gift cards and deliver them to counselors at Evergreen Middle School, who will in turn get these grocery gift cards to families.

What can you do:

Help us double these funds by clicking on the PEER category in our online GIVE button so that we can purchase even more grocery gift cards to impact local families in need.

Thank you to everyone that has already donated!
To date, we have
$1,850 raised so far, for a total of $3,850!
