Advent 2 - Peace
December 5, 2021, at 9:30 am

Online Worship Logistics:

  • The online doors to our Zoom worship will open at 9:00am. From 9am to 9:30am, the worship space will be open for folks to gather and get settled in. Our worship service will begin at 9:30am. Full details on how to join our online worship are found here.

  • Consider placing your Advent Wreath in your sacred Zoom worship space so that we can share them with one another. We will light the Advent Wreath candles toward the beginning of each worship service in Advent.

  • The key components to any Advent Wreath are four candles, one for each week of the season. We light the first candle on the first Sunday in Advent, the first and second candles on the second Sunday, and so on. As the name “wreath” suggests, some kinds of greens, in the form of a wreath, traditionally surround the candles. Typically, the candles are blue or purple to match the liturgical color of the season - and sometimes the third candle is pink. You choose whichever color of candle suits your mood for this season. Feel free to be creative - follow traditions or start your own. And together, may we await the coming of hope, peace, joy, and love into our hearts and into our word.

Christmas Eve Worship 2021

We are excited to announce that we are working together with Hillsboro United Methodist Church and Las Naciones Iglesia Metodista to provide Christmas Eve worship opportunities that will meet the needs for folks in our congregations who are eager to worship in person (using common sense COVID protocols) as well as for those who would prefer to worship online.

While we are still working out the details and will continue to keep you all updated as plans emerge. You all can help us in the planning process by taking this brief online survey here.

Thank you and stay tuned!

Where were you born and raised?

I grew up in southern Michigan, mainly in the southeast corner of the state next to Lake Erie and just north of Toledo, Ohio. Very flat area with rich farmland. We lived near Monroe but I went to school in a tiny town called Ida where the largest thing was the Farmer’s Co-op grain elevator. My high school class had 150 people in it. My father was a pastor in the Free Methodist church and I went to Spring Arbor University in Michigan, which is affiliated with the Free Methodist church. After college, I moved to Seattle for grad school and lived there for 5 years while getting my Ph.D. at U of Washington. Then I lived in the Cleveland area for 4 years (Case Western) and the Maryland suburbs of DC for a year (National Institutes of Health)  before moving to Portland.

Who is in your family?

I’m married to Steve Delamarter, which everyone already knows. We have six grandkids ranging in age from 17(!) to 7.  I’m a middle child with a brother who is two years older and another two years younger. We are all in science related jobs, which is a mystery to my parents - my father was a pastor and my mother taught elementary school before kids arrived.

What is your occupation or favorite hobby?

I’m a professor at OHSU where I have a research lab and do some teaching. My main hobby these days is reading but I used to do other things like play softball.

How did you find ChristChurch?

When I moved to Portland the only person I knew here was MaryKate Morse, who was one of the founding pastors of ChristChurch. I visited multiple churches, but Ed Metzler remembered my name when I came for a second time and had a real conversation with me. For an introvert who changed cities two times in two years that was enough to make me feel like this was home.

The pandemic has been tough for all of us and tragic for many, are there any silver linings from the pandemic you'd like to share?

For me working from home has been a silver lining. I hope to continue working from home a few days a week in the future.

What are you looking forward to?

We are looking forward to Thanksgiving with family this year up in Kirkland and seeing our granddaughter dance in the Nutcracker. And we are spending a week in Maui during December with my brother- and sister-in-law. We’ve never been there before and we are really looking forward to it.

Which Bible verse(s) speaks to you right now?

Psalm 13:5 is on a bookmark I use every day: “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation”.
