Are you interested in getting a head start on engaging with the scripture texts that form the basis for preaching each Sunday morning in worship?

Join us on Thursday, January 28th, at 7pm, for the next edition of TEXTtalks… a monthly conversation on the texts we hear in worship. Join me and others as we read through the upcoming Bible stories and ask ourselves… what do we notice? what do we wonder about?

In this upcoming session we will discuss the following stories for the month of January, all from the Gospel of Luke:

Luke 7:1-17    Who is worthy?   Feb 7

Luke 9: 28-45    Listen to him!    Feb 14

Luke 9:51-62 (Ash Wednesday)     Facing Jerusalem   Feb 17

Luke 10:25-42     Go and do the same.     Feb 21

Luke 13:1-9, 31-35      Jesus’ Lament     Feb 28

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities:

Hillsboro United Methodist Church is seeking volunteers to help with the free community food distribution events. These events happen every two weeks and there are two opportunities to help every event cycle.  Minors can serve with a guardian present. 

Prep Day 

This is the “behind the scenes” day and vital to our program. This is when we assemble the food bags and portion items for distribution. If you would like to help in a small group or do a task on your own, then this is the day for you! 

Food Distribution Day 

This is when we give the premade bags and clothing to the community. This day is a lot of fun but also a lot of work. We serve between 20- 100 each time and it can be hectic. These sessions are usually 2-5pm (but can vary).  If you thrive on a more chaotic environment or a love interacting with the community, then this day is for you. 

Skills ideal to volunteer for distribution days: 

• Being able to be on your feet for your entire shift. 
• Ability to lift at least 20 pounds 
• Ability to carry at least 20 pounds up and downstairs 

• Being bilingual in Spanish is a huge plus 
• During the winter months, we are outside and exposed to the elements for the entire event 

Policies for serving this program 

• Wearing a mask for the entire shift 

• We take temperature upon arrival to ensure it is safe for you to serve 
• You can volunteer once every 14 days (to follow HUMC's COVID policy) 
• No more than 10 volunteers per shift
