Letter from Pastor David

Dear friends,

A lot has happened since I last saw you all on Sunday. First, let me say what a joy it was to gather with many of you face to face on Kris Hoggard's lawn for the baptisms of Peyton Kristine and Dorothy Rose. It was a wonderful day and I am so thankful for Kris’ hospitality and the opportunity to be together after many months of seeing you all on a screen during worship.

Early yesterday morning (Wed, July 21st) I was bicycling with my 4-yr-old Siberian Husky, Iris. This is a daily exercise practice for the two of us. As many of you know, Huskies have a lot of energy that needs an outlet to remain happy and manageable pets. I have a device that attaches to my bike that makes bicycling with her very safe… most of the time. One scenario where that safety is compromised is when an unleashed dog is loose in the street. This was the case on Wednesday morning: a large dog, barking incessantly, chased after us and got tangled up with Iris and the bicycle. Before I knew it, I was on the pavement, having hit my head and my left shoulder. Fortunately, I was wearing a helmet and there was no injury to my head or brain. Unfortunately, my shoulder suffered a dislocation plus a clean break through my humerus bone right below the joint. Several neighbors stopped to take good care us until Rhonda arrived to take me to the Tuality Hospital ER here in Hillsboro. The medical team there managed to relocate the ball of the humerus back into the shoulder socket. I was sent home with a sling and pain medications and have a follow up appointment scheduled in two weeks to determine whether the break will heal on its own or whether a shoulder replacement will be necessary.

Iris also sustained injuries. She suffered two broken metacarpal bones in her left front paw, which will require her to wear a splint for a week. The doctor assures us that she will recuperate nicely hobbling on three legs for a while after that.

I am thankful that the accident was not worse and that, no matter what procedure is needed, Iris and I both have a good prognosis and there is every indication that we can expect a full recovery. I'm also very thankful for you all, this loving community that has surrounded me with care and concern as word has gotten out about my accident. The Church Council, along with the Worship Team and others, has jumped right into action and is working with our Synod staff to provide backup preaching for me this Sunday. As of now, my plan is to put the Fruit of the Spirit series on hold and resume it upon my return. At this time, Rhonda and I are doing all right with regard to meals and errands. After finishing this letter to you all I will be taking full advantage of the time I need to rest, recuperate, and heal. Rachel Jans returns from vacation next week and will be back in the office on Tuesday morning. She will be very helpful in keeping you all up to date with my progress, Thanks again for all the ways your care and concern reflects the unconditional love, grace and blessings of our friend and savior Jesus the Christ.

God’s peace,

Pastor David
