New Announcements & Reminders
2021 Annual Congregational  Meeting Recap

Thank you to everyone who attended the Annual Congregational Meeting on Sunday, June 6, 2021 after worship. We voted and approved the 2021-2022 fiscal budget, church council slate and became a Reconciling in Christ congregation (details below). We reflected on the past year and looked ahead to the challenges and opportunities that face us in the year ahead. Thank you to everyone for participating in the online edition of the annual meeting.

Voting results:

The 2021-2022 fiscal year budget is a deficit budget. As we continue to pray and worship in this liminal space we have a great opportunity to use our sales proceeds to develop our mission. We hope not to continue relying on it to meet the budget.

The budget was approved with 26 yes votes, 0 no votes.

The Council Slate was approved with 26 yes votes, 0 no votes

Thank you for voting!

We welcome two newly elected church council members:

The third voting item was the proposal to become a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) congregation. This passed with 24 yes, 1 no. The welcome statement and RIC Partners Public Commitments will be on our website soon and linked in a future Faith News. Thank you to the Reconciling in Christ committee for your many years of work. Stayed tuned for next steps and ways to get involved.

Next Steps:

Council meetings are typically on the 2nd Wednesday at 6:30 pm each month. Throughout the pandemic, the council has also been holding additional meetings during the month. The meetings are open to all. Email newly elected Council President Suze Engbretson if you would like to attend.

Minutes from the annual meeting will be available for review in mid-July (after they are approved by the council).

We ask for your continued prayers for the church council in this upcoming fiscal year. Thank you again to all who attended and presented.

Juneteenth Event: Historical Marker Ceremony
Join the Oregon Remembrance Project, the Coos History Museum, and the City of Coos Bay in finding justice for historical injustice.

The Equal Justice Initiative (Montgomery, AL) has documented nearly 6,500 lynchings of African Americans between 1865-1950. At least one lynching of an African American occurred in Oregon. His name was Alonzo Tucker and he was lynched in front of a crowd of 300 in Coos Bay, OR in 1902.

Since 2018, the Oregon Remembrance Project, the Coos History Museum, and the City of Coos Bay have worked to memorialize Alonzo Tucker into the collective memory and collective consciousness of Oregon by participating in the Equal Justice Initiative's Community Remembrance Project, which aims to work in the communities where the lynchings of African Americans took place to find healing and reconciliation through a sober reflection on history.
Bryan Stevenson, Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative, says "truth and reconciliation are sequential."

This truth telling began with a soil collection ceremony for Alonzo Tucker on February 29, 2020, and this truth telling will continue with the installation of an Equal Justice Initiative historical marker in Coos Bay on June 19, 2021
.
We have the power to rewrite the ending to history's stories. Join us in rewriting the ending to Alonzo Tucker's story. There were 300 people at the lynching and our goal is to have more than 300 people paying witness to that lynching on this day.
1.  Follow the Oregon Remembrance Project on social media:
Facebook page here and main website here.

2. Save the date, and plan on “tuning in” to the Juneteenth Historical Marker Ceremony in Coos Bay  (though details are still being finalized, communities are invited to show up in person on the day, or to participate via zoom.)  Over 300 people attended the lynching of Alonzo Tucker in 1902, and the leaders of the event hope to top that number on June 19th, 2021, the first year the State of Oregon has officially recognized Juneteenth as a holiday.
