 (palmless) Palm Sunday - March 28, 2021

This will be the second Palm Sunday in which we cannot participate in the traditional palm procession.

This year we had an ashless Ash Wednesday and, alas, this year we will have a palmless Palm Sunday.

Fortunately, Luke has given us an out: Did you know that Luke doesn’t even mention palm branches (or leafy branches of any kind) in his telling of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem? That’s right, according to Luke, people in the crowd “spread their cloaks on the roadway as Jesus rode along.”

I am fairly certain that we all have coats and jackets we can easily put our hands on during this cold and rainy season. In fact, let's look for our best, or favorite, or most expensive coat or jacket and bring that into the worship space this Sunday.

LENT 2021: Brave Space Conversations –

The Sixth Sunday in Lent (Palm Sunday)

The sixth and last conversation in our Lenten Series: Brave Space Conversations will be with Alaide Vilchis Ibarra (she, her) during worship on Sunday, March 28th

Alaide is the Executive Director for Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice (IMIrJ). IMIrJ accompanies and equips communities and people of faith to advance immigrant justice through direct accompaniment of immigrants facing detention and deportation, policy advocacy at local, state and national levels, and prophetic action. Founded in 2006, IMIrJ is in relationship with leaders from over 140 congregations throughout the state of Oregon.

Together we will reflect on Jesus' words from Luke’s Gospel in his triumphal entry into Jerusalem… “I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the very stones would cry out!” We will talk about what it means for people of faith to cry out for justice for the widow, the orphan the stranger and the immigrant.

TODAY, Thursday, March 25th, 7 - 8:30pm

Council Minutes on our website:
March 10, 2021 Church Council Meeting and the Special Congregation Meeting Minutes are both available here

Dear Friends,

It is with sadness in our hearts that we share the news of Bill Branch’s death on Sunday, March 21st, due to complications related to esophageal cancer. Bill and Marcia were pillars of the ChristChurch community and prior to their moving to Vancouver, Washington a few years ago, both played an integral part in the life and vitality of this congregation. We offer our condolences to Marcia and all of Bill’s family and hold them in prayer during this time of grief and loss. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the family has decided to forgo a memorial service for the time being. If you would like to reach out to Marcia with a card, her address is 10211 NE 128th Ave, Vancouver, WA 98682.

OBITUARY

William E. Branch passed away peacefully in his home from complications of esophageal cancer on March 21, 2021.

Bill was born September 6, 1944 in Great Falls, Montana to William and Virginia Branch. As a young boy, he bonded with his father while participating in Boy Scouts, eventually earning his rank as an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Great Falls High School in 1962 where he met Marcia Andersen, whom he later married in 1964 while attending Montana State University for undergrad. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in 1966, he entered the army as a 2nd Lieutenant. His first assignment led him to Anchorage, Alaska where he lived with Marcia and their two sons, Kip and Darrin, for the next two years. From there, he went to Vietnam, serving as Captain and Company Commander, assisting with the building of roads and bridges in the Highlands area. Upon returning home, he enrolled at MSU to obtain a Masters in Hydraulics and Hydrology. During this time, the family also welcomed a daughter, Kari. In 1971, Bill accepted a job with the United States Army Corps of Engineers in Walla Walla, Washington, where he remained until 1984. He then relocated to Portland, Oregon to serve as Chief of Hydraulics and Hydrology. Around 1996, he was promoted to his dream job, Chief of Water Management in the Portland district. Throughout his career, he had the opportunity to serve as a key representative for the Corps and travel to numerous countries, including Canada, China, South Korea, and the Philippines. Outside of work, Bill enjoyed woodworking, hiking, spending time with his grandchildren, going to church, and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. Since retiring in 2004, he and Marcia have been traveling the world with some of their closest friends. He spent his remaining days relaxing at home with his family by his side.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Virginia Branch. He is survived by wife Marcia, children Kari, Darrin, Kip [Robin], grandchildren Hannah, Ellie [Joe] Pyles, and great granddaughter Clarabelle.

Cook With Me: Comfort Food
Monday, March 29 at 5pm

Who doesn’t love comfort food?! It’s usually, warm, nourishing, and comforting! But if you’re like me, sometimes comfort food doesn’t love you back – for example, I don’t tolerate gluten, and many of my favorite comfort foods contain lots of gluten! So comfort food can taste good, but then not feel good later.

Can you relate? You’ve had to remove certain foods from your diet and yet you miss comfort food that contains those foods? Let me help! I know finding substitutions can be tough. I’ve been there! And I’m ready to share some of my favorite comfort foods with you in a 2-part Cook With Me! series.

While I can’t guarantee that my substitutions will work for you, we’ll at least have fun making them together and I think you’ll still love the result. And who knows – maybe it will hit the spot and you will have found a new comfort food that also loves you back

In part 2, we’ll be making tuna casserole and nachos! Yum Tuna casserole is gluten-free and dairy-free Nachos are gluten-free and vegetarian, with vegan or meat-based options! With both recipes, there are so many options to customize the recipe for you and/or your family. Contact me if you have any questions! Class will be held online via zoom - Monday, March 29th from 5-6:30pm. To register for the class, click here.
