News & Announcements:

A Collection for a friend of the congregation, Joseph Makumi

Dear friends, you have heard reports that our friend in Kenya, Joseph Makumi, has lost both his brother and his mother in the last two weeks.  There is great sorrow and loss, but there is also consolation and hope.

We asked him what effect this has had on his resources.  This was his reply:

“On the current need, I want to be frank with you. We buried our mum and I was able to clear all the necessary bills hence no debt was left out unpaid but the whole process left me dry financially. I used whatever I had to the final coin from hospital bills to the final rite. I can't complain about it because I did it to a great friend, prayer partner and a mother. If there is something that has to come from your end, then it will cover what has already been done. This, I leave it at your discretion. I am so happy to be part of Christchurch member. May God bless you abundantly.”

We appreciated the candor of his words.

Some of you have expressed a desire to support Joseph in a financial way.  This is not something for which ChristChurch can give a tax-deductible receipt, but it is still something each of us can help with if we choose.

Steve Delamarter will receive funds and forward them to Joseph via Western Union.  If you are interested in contributing, you can send Steve a note (sdelamar@georgefox.edu) to work out details or send him a PayPal payment (using that email address).  Steve will provide a full report on the pass-through of the funds.

Please feel free to reach out to Steve or Pastor David (pastordavid@comchristchurch.org) if you have any additional questions.

Faith and Democracy in Crisis:
Resisting Authoritarianism, Protecting Human Dignity,
a seven-week series hosted by Spirit of Grace, Beaverton. Primary presenters will be Rev. Dr. Brian Brandt and Rev. Dr. Janet Parker, with a visit from guest presenter Dr. Anna Floerke Scheid of Duquesne University.  Come to learn about the political and theological dimensions of the anti-democratic insurgency attempting to take over the federal government. They'll bring this authoritarian insurgency into conversation with foundational Christian teachings on church and society from Catholic, Lutheran, and United Church of Christ traditions and formulate visions for Christian resistance that protects human dignity as created in the image of God. They’ll conclude with opportunities to carry that vision forward into action through ecclesial and civic networks.

Sessions will take place on Zoom from 7:00 - 8:15 pm on seven Wednesdays from September 14 to October 26.
Each session will include time for presentation, small and full group discussion, and spiritual practice to sustain us through challenging times. Register here. Additional questions can be directed to PastorRobyn@spiritofgracepdx.org.
