Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Team Updates

Reconciling in Christ is a program for Lutheran congregations who want to publicly welcome people of all sexual orientations, gender identity, and gender expression into their communities.

The RIC team typically holds a potluck and meeting on the first Thursday of each month at 6pm. Their next meeting is TONIGHT,  February 6th.

Intentional welcome to all people and families matters. As Lutherans, we believe every human being reflects the Divine image. That is why the use of personal pronouns matters so much. Each of us is a beloved child of God, wonderfully made, just as we are. Our confidence in Christ Jesus calls us to work with all God’s people to transform our communities, so welcome can be a lived experience in our congregations and in the world.

PERSONAL PRONOUNS

Personal pronouns are the set of pronouns a person wants others to use when talking to or about them. Understanding there is a difference between a person's sex, gender identity, and gender expressions makes the use of pronouns important. Asking someone "What pronouns do you use?" is a great way to hospitably see, name, and care for LGBTQIA+ people.

Here are a few helpful ways to use pronouns

1.  Ask people what their pronouns are when you meet them. “I want to make sure I am using the proper pronouns for you, which pronoun do you use?”

2.  Add them to the signature of your emails.

3.  Make space for people to add their pronouns to name tags for events and gatherings.

4.  If you make a mistake and someone corrects you, thank them for teaching you their personal pronouns.

The Space Between Us: Immigrants, Refugees and Oregon

Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at 6:30 PM – 8 PM
Spirit of Grace

7400 SW Scholls Ferry Rd, Beaverton, Oregon 97008

Spirit of Grace is hosting a conversation as part of the Oregon Humanities Conversation Project!

Global displacement is on the rise, thanks to intractable conflicts, economics, and climate change. Oregonians have and will continue to see the results of international migration in our neighborhoods. In this conversation, Manuel Padilla, who has worked with refugees in Haiti, Chad, and Washington, DC, asks participants to consider questions of uprootedness, hospitality, identity, perception, and integration and how we might build more informed, responsive, resilient, and vibrant communities.

The event is free, but please register in advance. A $5 donation to help offset costs would be accepted with gratitude. All are welcome.
