Dear Friends,
Rhonda and I are leaving for Mexico City this week. We will be gone from Thursday, October 31st through Wednesday, November 6th. In fact, when this edition of Faith News is sent out, we will already be on a shuttle bus heading south from Mexico City to Jojutla, in the state of Morelos.
The purpose of our trip is to gather in person with a group of people who have been walking together for the last few years in mutual spiritual and theological accompaniment. Our companions on this journey come mostly from Mexico, Peru and the United States. They are pastors, lay people, theology professors, and people who claim no formal religious affiliation. Each year, beginning in July, we share reflection papers with one another online and then gather monthly for video chats to discuss those reflections. We do this once a month for three months and then those who are able gather in person to deepen the conversations and the relationships we are forming. We are, in effect, doing theology together outside of the bounds of academic institutions, grounded in our various and diverse lived experiences. This process calls us to deep vulnerability with each other about the suffering and woundedness we encounter and bear witness to in our lives and in our work.
This year over 80 people have been participating in this process and we will have the opportunity to meet many of them in person, most for the first time. This process of doing theology has become an important annual faith practice for us since joining this growing group of companeros back in 2017. We ask for your prayers as we journey and look forward to sharing our experiences with you upon our return.
While we are gone, Pastor Matthew Eagan from Calvary Lutheran here in Hillsboro will be covering pastoral care. If you are in need of a hospital visit or have other pastoral care needs, please call the church office at 503-617-9526 and press extension 4 when prompted. You will be transferred directly to Pastor Matthew’s cell phone. On Sunday morning, Pastor Mary Peterson will preach and preside. Mary currently serves as a hospice chaplain in the Portland area.
God’s peace,
Pastor David
