Faith News Update for October 5, 2017

October 8th, 2017

9:30am Sunday Worship with

Holy Communion

In the evening, and in the morning

you shall know and you shall see…

Old Testament reading for this Sunday:

Exodus 16:1-31

Community Events in Hillsboro tomorrow:

Maria Hinojosa, nationally-recognized journalist is coming to Washington County on Friday! VAN, the City of Hillsboro and Centro Cultural are

co-hosting her from 5 - 6:45pm at the Hillsboro Civic Center.

As the anchor and executive producer of the long-running weekly NPR show Latino USA, and as anchor of the Emmy Award-winning talk show Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One from WGBH/La Plaza, Hinojosa has informed millions of Americans about the fastest growing group in our country. Previously, a Senior Correspondent for NOW on PBS, and currently, a rotating anchor for Need to Know, Hinojosa has reported hundreds of important stories—from the immigrant work camps in NOLA after Katrina, to teen girl victims of sexual harassment on the job, to Emmy Award-winning stories of the poor in Alabama.

This casual event will include social time and an address from Maria, along with other local leaders. Full details here.

Then on Friday evening consider joining the community for this event:

"We are lighting 800 candles on October 6th to raise local awareness for the 800,000 DACA recipients - 1 candle will symbolically represent 1,000 DACA recipients - in the United States. The executive decision to rescind DACA not only impacts hundreds of thousands of youth across the country, but hundreds here in Washington County. October 6th is the first day the program prevents recipients from renewing their permits.

We hope to count on your support to light a candle and stand in solidarity with Dreamers across the country and in our community." Full details here.

Update: interfaith and ecumenical leaders will be leading portions of the Service. We are excited to collaborate on such a special event THIS Sunday.

Church Council Meeting Reminder!

Join us on the third Friday of the month at 6:30pm for Movies that Matter.
What happens at these meetups?
Each month we gather for a potluck supper and watch a film that matters to one of the group. Then, the person who picked the film will start off the conversation. If all goes well, we’ll talk a little about the film, a little about life, and a lot about what matters.

Here's some hints about the October movie:
Copyright rules stipulate that we cannot advertise the name of the film in advance. In September we watched Hidden Figures.

- This 2003 film stars Joseph Fiennes as a 16th Century historical figure
- Rotten Tomatoes says: "Engrossing, as much for its history lesson as for its filmmaking."
- We are showing this film as part of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation celebration

What you’ll need to participate…

Be at least 17 years old,
A potluck dish to share,
A love of movies!
Come celebrate this community based ministry initiative!
Join our Meetup.com group here.
