Hello Corinth Families!

T-minus 19 days and counting. We have lots of fun to be crammed into these last 3 weeks of school!

Rain, rain, go away! Lightning cancelled the Dragon Dash race on Saturday. However, it was still a great party in the gym, and many thanks to the volunteers and runners who were turned out ready to go!

I know we all love our outstanding Corinth teachers and staff, and this week we get to show it with staff appreciation week!

Your to-do list for this week:
  • Monday- Golf tournament at Oakwood. Hit 'em straight and long Dragon golfers!
  • Come out Monday night 5-9 to Papa Keno's in Overland Park and support Corinth!
  • Tuesday - Bring a flower for your favorite teacher or staff member.
  • Variety Show Tryouts are after school on Wednesday
  • Bring a note for your teacher or favorite staff member on Thursday.
  • Thursday is early dismissal at 12:30.
  • No school Friday for professional learning.

Our Teacher Appreciation Committee has a fabulous week planned for our wonderful teachers and staff at Corinth. (See flyer here for the plans). But, they need your help! On Tuesday, bring a flower for your teacher (they will have a vase) for a unique and personal bouquet. On Thursday, your little Dragon can bring a note for their favorite teacher or staff member. A template can be found here.

A huge thank you to our awesome Corinth friends and family who braved the rain to join us for a Dragon Dash party in the school.
Thank you to our amazing volunteers! We could do it without you! Always quick to help and flexible with all the changes.
Thank you to the Lancer Dancers, the Nelson Atkins Art Museum, Camp Cheer and DJ Tally for keeping everyone entertained and active!
Last but not least, thank you to our generous sponsors! We truly appreciate your support, showing up early on a Saturday morning and all the yummy goodies!
If anyone has a chip from the 5K race they can either mail it back to the KC Running Club in the envelope it came in or get the chip to Sheryl in the office by Tues afternoon or they will be charged $1.50 per chip for those not returned.


FIELD DAY will be held on Friday, May 12th (Rainout will be Monday, May 15th)

4th – 5th Graders 9:00-11:15

Kindergarten 12:30 – 2:00

1st – 3rd Graders 12:45 – 2:45

As with previous years, 6th Graders will help coordinate the activities, however we will still need parent volunteers to prep and oversee stations at the event. Please sign up for either a morning and/or afternoon shift as your schedule allows. Thank you so much for your help in making this year's Field Day a success!

We are looking for 4 Corinth volunteers to help the SMAC Clothing Exchange on Monday, May 22nd. I can say from personal experience, that this is a great volunteer experience (and a great excuse to clean out the closets for a donation at the same time!). Please contact Amy McCarthy if you are able to come (I know school will be out, but you can even bring the kids to help! Kids under 12 just need adult supervision)

About the SMAC Clothing Exchange:
Clothing Exchange is made possible with SMSD PTA volunteers, in addition to monetary donations.

It is staffed 100%, by volunteer parents and families within our district.

Each PTA Unit in the district donates money to be used to buy new underwear and socks.

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Sort donations
  • Hang donations
  • Assist shoppers

Each PTA Unit has an assigned volunteer day, however, anyone is welcome to volunteer more often!

Elementary schools are assigned from 8:30-11:00am

Tips for volunteering:

  • Arrive 30 minutes before shopping area opens
  • Elementary schools - send 4 volunteers
  • Children under 12 need to have an adult with them.

Shawnee Mission School District Board of Education Names Interim Superintendent

The Board of Education has unanimously voted to name Dr. Kenny Southwick as interim superintendent of the Shawnee Mission School District, effective July 1, 2017. The announcement came during a special meeting held tonight. Dr. Jim Hinson remains acting superintendent until his

June 30, 2017 retirement.

Southwick has 37 years of education experience, and is a familiar face to our community as he has served as deputy superintendent for the Shawnee Mission School District since 2014. Before coming to Shawnee Mission, Southwick served the Belton School District for 22 years, with 12 of those years as superintendent.

“I am honored and humbled the Board of Education has selected me to lead the team through this time of transition,” Southwick said. “Our focus will continue to be on our students, staff, parents and community. Great things happen every day in our classrooms. Our job is to continue to ensure every student reaches their full potential.”

Dr. Southwick graduated from William Jewell College in 1976. After working as a social studies teacher, counselor, and football and baseball coach, he moved back to his home town of Excelsior Springs to teach and coach in 1979. Coaching and counseling once again became his passion and in 1980 he became the head football coach of the Tigers. In 1985, he moved to the central office to become the director of special education.

Sara Goodburn, president of the district's board of education, said, "We believe Dr. Southwick is a visionary and will be a great leader for our staff, students and community during this time of transition. His dedication to our district over the past three years is proven. With our innovative curriculum, signature programs and state-of-the-art facilities, our district has never been stronger."

Southwick added, "Our first priority is to close a successful school year for our teachers and students. Then, in June, we plan on having a new funding formula from the state that will allow us to prepare for the next school year." Following the completion of those top priorities, the Board of Education will begin the search for a new superintendent.

Goodburn, added, "The board will engage the community to understand what our patrons want in a leader. We feel confident the district will attract top talent, so we will continue to offer the very best education possible to all students."

Anticipated Timeline for Superintendent Search

July-August – Issue Request For Proposal and select search firm.

September-October – Community engagement surveys conducted.

October – Search firm presents community survey results to board.

November-January – Superintendent candidates recruited.

February-March – Candidate Interviews conducted.

March-April – New superintendent selected.
