Week of August 29-September 2, 2016
Hello Corinth Families!

Back to School night is this Thursday, September 1st. Please come to visit your child's classroom to hear about what they will be doing this year. And, at 6:00, come to our general PTA meeting in the gymnasium. Our main agenda items will be to introduce the 2016-17 officers and approve our budget.

Your to-do list for this week:
*Back to School Night on Thursday, September 1
*Get your Spirit Wear orders in (due August 30)
*Fall Fest - order your wrist bands and meal vouchers, and VOLUNTEER!
*Sign up for the directory if you have not done so already.

I look forward to seeing you on Thursday night!

Amy McCarthy
PTA President
Back to School Night
Be sure to attend this fun annual evening at the school. It is an adult-only event at which you get to visit your child's classroom and hear about the plans for the coming year. 4th through 6th grades will be from 5:30-6:00; Kindergarten through 3rd grade will be 6:30-7.

Between (at 6:00), be sure to stop by the gymnasium for our General PTA Meeting. We will introduce the PTA officers for the 2016-17 school year, and review and approve the budget. If you have questions or concerns about the budget, (preliminary proposed budget attached here) please send them to me.

  • You can sign up to help with the parties… plan a craft or game, or sign up to be a Parent Helper, an extra set of hands to help facilitate the party.

  • If you cannot be at the parties, you can still participate by sending treats, drinks or paper goods.

  • Be a Room Parent and facilitate parties, and make the teacher feel special throughout the year.

  • Be the Class Photographer and help the yearbook staff get fun pictures of all the kids!

  • Keep an eye out for Fall Fest and Auction sign ups as well.

We are still looking for some volunteers on our PTA Committees. If you are interested in helping with the Yearbook, with an eye to succeed the role of Chair, or if you can be the Chair of the Reflections committee (a PTA-sponsored student competition. This year's theme is "What is your Story?" Click here for more information), email Amy McCarthy

Don't forget to follow the link in your email from Scott William to update your directory, (even if just with your child's teacher), join the PTA, volunteer and more! Questions or problems, contact Scott William.
Parent Parties!

You are now able to pay the suggested donation ($125) online through your directory account (go to the directory, select the PTA section, and look for the option to pay for parent parties). Of course, you may always make payments in any amount (any amounts are truly welcome) via check with the envelope that comes attached to the paper invitation approximately 2 weeks before your event.

Many thanks to our hosts this year!! Check the upcoming events section for dates and hosts.
Any questions, contact Michelle Schmidt.

New this year for the Corinth Benefit Auction are silent auction grade baskets! Each grade has a theme and parents are encouraged to bring an item to the fall parent parties. Please note, this does not replace the $125 suggested donation for the parent party. The easy thing about these baskets and your donations are that you can donate a really simple item and collectively they’ll add up to a really great package at the March 4, 2017 event!

The Donation Committee will accept any donation, but here are some simple ideas of what you can contribute to your child’s grade basket{s}. Feel free to drop it off at the parent party, or in the office with a note {“ auction – grade”}. Contact Trisha Sims or Jenn Miller with questions.

We know our PTA does a lot of fundraising, so I thought we should highlight some of the projects that the PTA is able to do because of your generous donations of both time and money. Among such things as classroom grants, purchasing yearbooks for all the children, subsidizing field trips, maintenance on our garden, new books for the library, and teacher appreciation events, we undertake the major funding projects of providing an additional aide in the classroom focused on math, a Spanish program, and new this year -- a Maker's Space. Look in this section weekly for highlights on some of these projects. This year, we welcome a new math aide, Jennifer Grayson:

Hi! My name is Jennifer Grayson and I’m the new Math Aide at Corinth Elementary School. I grew up in Evansville, Indiana where I moved from last November when my husband accepted a job here in Kansas City. I attended Western Kentucky University where I earned my degree in Middle Grades Math Education. Before moving here, I was a Kindergarten assistant for a year and a half and a substitute for Pre-K through 8th grade for a year at a private school in Indiana. I love working with kids and I love math! It brings me so much joy to see a child improve and eventually master a concept they have been struggling with!

As the Math Aide, I will be going around to each grade level and working with small groups of students who may be struggling in math or may need some enrichment in math. I am very excited to have the opportunity to help your children succeed this year!

Treasurer FYI for the new school year
  • Deposits require a filled out CEF/PTA Deposit Request Form in order to be accepted. Deposits are usually left with Sheryl at the office to put in the safe for the Asst. Treasurer to pick up.
  • Reimbursements require a filled out CEF/PTA Reimbursement Request Form in order for reimbursements to be processed. Reimbursement requests go into the Treasurer's mail box in the Corinth office.

Join the Shawnee Mission Area Council PTA for Super Chats. Super Chats are informal Q & As with SMSD Superintendent, Dr. Jim Hinson. There will be several Super Chats throughout the school year at the SMSD middle schools. The first is September 29, 2016 9:30 am-10:30 am at Trailridge Middle School. Click here for more information.
Did you know

Did you know that breakfast is available each day at your student’s school? Eating a nutritious breakfast helps students achieve the classroom goals set for them. National studies consistently confirm that breakfast helps kids concentrate, think, behave and learn. Eating breakfast:

  • improves children's classroom performance, including better test scores and grades

  • increases children's ability to focus and concentrate on school work

  • decreases behavior problems, tardiness and visits to the school nurse

  • increases attendance rates

  • decreases risk of food insecurity and hunger that impair development and learning

  • may protect against childhood obesity

If it is difficult to fit breakfast into your morning routine, breakfast is available in all schools. A student must choose a full portion of at least three different items to receive a reimbursable school breakfast. One of the three items must be ½ cup of fruit or juice. Breakfast items include: protein, grain, fruit/juice, and milk.

Don’t forget – if your child receives free or reduced meals, they are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch per day as part of this benefit. All breakfast and lunch meal choices are available for all students regardless of eligibility status.

The school breakfast menus, lunch menus, and other nutrition information are available on the district’s website

Come bring a picnic blanket and join your kids during their normal lunch times for the annual lunches outside on the lawn!

Thank you!
A big thank you to Scott William for his great work in creating and updating our directory this year. We love having the PTA functions consolidated and streamlined! We are extremely lucky to be the beneficiaries of his time and talent.

Keep in mind that many generous companies offer a matching gift/donation program that either match dollar for dollar or a % of the total if the donation is to a 501(c)(3) organization and that organization can provide a receipt. Our Corinth PTA qualifies, and we can provide a receipt for you! Please consider taking advantage of these programs and increase the impact of your donations to the Corinth PTA. To request a receipt or ask questions, contact Sarah Casey.
Ever wonder where those Peachjar flyers go? Did you know there is a repository, in which you can look at them again? Click here to find them!
