The Dragon Digest

Your Corinth PTA Newsletter
Week of August 31 - September 4, 2015
Hello Corinth Families!

As I mentioned at Back to School Night, we are so excited to be offering the ability to pay for PTA dues and donations online. We're hoping this makes your lives a little easier!

If you haven't already done so, pleae take a few minutes to fill out the Volunteer Form, and make sure your information is in the Directory.

Wishing you all a great long, end of summer weekend, and safe travels whether you are going out of town or across town. Don't forget, it's a four-day weekend for the kids!

Erin Herbst
PTA President

We are encouraging all parents to join the PTA. With your dues, you will help fund grants for our teachers, and the great events at our school. As a member of the Corinth PTA, you will also be part of the national and Kansas PTAs.

We also encourage you to use the online directory, which is free to all parents. If you have not tried to access it from your smart phone, CLICK HERE for instructions on how to install it.

To pay for your PTA Dues online, simply choose which option you would like and click the appropriate button just below.

If you prefer to pay by check, CLICK HERE. For questions about Membership, contact: Mandi Hunter .

In conjuction with our annual Parent Parties, we raise funds for the PTA's major financial initiatives (Spanish Program and Math Aide). The suggested donation is $125/child. Of course, donations of all sizes are sincerely appreciated and anonymous. We are grateful for what ever amount your budget allows. Don't forget that this is a tax-deductible donation, and to find out if your employer will match your donation.

If you prefer to pay by check, please place your check in the envelope included with your Parent Party invitation, and bring to the party, or deliver it to the school office.

*Please consider adding 3% to your donation to help us cover the costs associated with accepting credit card payments. Suggested donation would be $128.75/child.
3. Attend our First Friday Parent Coffee

Please join the PTA in the Cafeteria after drop-off on Friday, September 4. Connect with other parents. And, we'll be talking about iPads with Mr. Lowe! Stay for a sip, or a cup.

If you have some extra time, please consider staying to help get the iPads sorted and ready for the big deployment.
4. unPack iPads 2.0

Thank you to all who helped last week! We still have a bit more unpacking to do before the iPads are deployed on September 10. We need 9 Parents to help unpack and sort them on Friday, September 4.

SIGN UP HERE for a shift.

Say Hola to our Spanish Teacher!

The Corinth PTA continues to fund the twice-weekly Spanish language program for all Corinth students. Señora Martin is back for her fourth year at Corinth, and in a brand new classroom!
La Señora Martha Martin is from El Tigre, Venezuela. After high school, she attended Centro De Estudios Universitarios in Monterrey Mexico and obtained her Bachelor’s degree of science in psychology. Shortly after graduation she worked as an instructor of interpersonal communication and philosophy at Colegio Labastida in Monterrey Mexico before returning to Venezuela. In Venezuela, she continued her career in education and taught elementary age curriculum at private and public schools. She moved to Kansas City in 2005 with her husband, and has worked at several non-profit organizations as a social worker and interventionist. Around the beginning of 2011, she realized how much she missed the classroom and decided to make a return to teaching, and started a position as a full time Spanish teacher at a Montessori school in Missouri. The following year, she joined the Young Spanish team and is now starting her 4th year here at Corinth. The Spanish room has a new location, previously up stairs with the home classrooms; it is now located downstairs with the rest of the special classes, (Music, P.E. etc.). There is an open invitation to any parent wishing to drop in to observe a class or to just look at the decorations. Also, as in previous years, Young Spanish will be offering an after school program this fall, details to follow.
La Señora Martha is married and lives in Kansas City, Missouri.

Calling all cowboys and cowgirls!! SAVE THE DATE! Corinth Corral aka "Fall Fest" is right around the corner. Get your steed, your saddle and sharpest western wear ready for this all school event on September 25th from 5p-8p. A little teaser of you can expect this year: carnival games, rides, Planet Sub, cotton candy and NEW this year ~ ponies! More details to come.

In the mean time, you can SIGN UP HERE to volunteer for a shift.

FOOD SERVICE….Did you know…………

Did you know there are Nutrition Standards for All Foods Sold in School called ‘Smart Snacks in Schools’? The new guidelines went into effect July 1, 2014. The law has specific nutrition standards for all foods and beverages sold to students outside the school meal programs; on the school campus; and at any time during the school day. This includes foods and beverages sold a la carte in the cafeteria, in school stores, at snack bars, through fundraising, from vending machines or any other venues that sell food to students – including coffee shops and bake sales. The school day is defined from the midnight before, to 30 minutes after the end of the instructional school day. For more information, please visit the Smart Snacks section of the SMSD Food Service webpage.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation Smart Snacks Product Calculator can be used for food and beverage items to determine if they meet the nutrition standards. Print off the results page summary along with a copy of the product’s label for documentation. This documentation should be submitted to the school’s designated person to request approval for a fundraising event.

Don’t forget – if your child receives free or reduced meals, they are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch per day as part of this benefit. All breakfast and lunch meal choices are available for all students regardless of eligibility status.

The school breakfast menus, lunch menus, and other nutrition information are available on the district’s website at

Click here for "Nutrition Nuggets" in English or Español.

Do you know any new Corinth families? Please forward this email to them! They can CLICK HERE to sign up to receive future Corinth PTA emails.
