The Dragon Digest

Your Corinth PTA Newsletter
Week of September 14-18, 2015
Hello Corinth Families!

Just one week after Labor Day weekend, and the temperatures are dropping and the leaves are already falling! We're half-way through the first quarter, Parent Parties are underway, and Lunches on the Lawn commence this week.

Our old favorites are coming up: Culver's Night, Walking School Bus and Fall Fest.

And we have some new activities this year: Girls on the Run, Running Club, First Friday Coffees.

Also new this year is our Math Aide, Amy Bayles. Read below for some of the great things our teachers say about her.

Thanks to all who have joined the PTA this year, and to those who have made donations. We could not do all these great things without your support.

Have a great week, and don't forget to charge the iPads!

Erin Herbst
PTA President

Forms came home with your children last week. You can also place your order online: Use order code: 01594XA

Orders must be received by Monday, September 14.

Make up photos will be taken on: Tuesday, October 20.
2. Meet us for Dinner at CULVER'S on Tuesday: 5-8 p.m.

Join us for a fun way to connect with other Corinth families and support our school. And if you're lucky, Mr. Lowe might be the one to serve your ice cream.

Each month, the Corinth PTA hosts a Restaurant Night at a local eatery that will give back a portion of the night's proceeds to our school.

The first Restaurant Night will be at Culver's on State Line. The class with the most attendees will win free ice cream!

3. Parents of 1st, 2nd & 3rd Graders: Attend Lunch on the Lawn

Corinth Community,

I am very excited to participate in my first lunch on the lawn on September 16th with 1st grade. In the event of rain or wet ground conditions, we will move the event into the gym. Don’t forget to bring a blanket! For lunch on the lawn, we will have both the north and south entrances open for visitors and family. A sign in sheet will be located in the lobby with visitor stickers (checking into the office will not be required for lunch on the lawn).

Thank you and please call the office with any questions!

Chris Lowe

1st Grade: Wednesday 9/16 @ 10:50 - 11:15
2nd Grade: Friday 9/18 @ 11:00 - 11:25
3rd Grade: Thursday 9/17 @ 11:30 - 11:55

4. Start Running with the Corinth Fall Running Club

Is your child interested in running? Corinth will be kicking off a fall running club for all grades starting Wednesday. Join us each Wednesday from 3:20-4:00. We'll meet in the gym, get a few stretches in, and then head to the track to do some laps. The club will last for six weeks (September 16 - October 21). Each participating child must bring the permission slip, which can be downloaded here, and must wear tennis shoes and bring a water bottle!

Please print and bring the signed permission slip to the first meeting on Sept. 16. We look forward to running with you!

5. PARENTS of 1st Graders: Attend Annual Parent Party on Saturday
These fun, casual, adult-only events, are a great way to connect with parents in your child's grade, and are held in conjunction with our annual fundraising.

We are raising funds for the PTA's major financial initiatives (Spanish Program and Math Aide). The suggested donation is $125/child. Of course, donations of all sizes are sincerely appreciated and anonymous. We are grateful for what ever amount your budget allows. Don't forget that this is a tax-deductible donation, and to find out if your employer will match your donation.

If you prefer to pay by check, please place your check in the envelope included with your Parent Party invitation, and bring to the party, or deliver it to the school office.

*Please consider adding 3% to your donation to help us cover the costs associated with accepting credit card payments. Suggested donation would be $128.75/child.
6. Get your Fall Fest Wrist Bands and Volunteer for a Shift

Fall Fest will be here before you know it cowboys! Have you ordered your wristbands yet?! Copy of Flyer/Order Form.

Fall Fest is also in dire need of volunteers. This awesome event is run solely by our amazing Corinth volunteer community. Please help fill volunteer spots or we are in jeopardy of losing certain games…you wouldn’t want that for your little cowboy or cowgirl would you?!

Please SIGN UP HERE to volunteer for a shift.

Corinth Corral is Friday Sept. 25th. We will get excited the entire week leading up to the event with spirit days M-F. Show your Dragon passion by dressing up each day!!

Monday 9/21: Western Wear to KICK-off Spirit Week!
Tuesday 9/22: crazy hair day
Wednesday 9/23: pajama day
Thursday 9/24: crazy socks
Friday 9/25: Corinth spirit wear!!!

What the Teachers are saying about the PTA-funded full time Math Aide, Amy Bayles:

"While we are still working out the kinks of our scheduling, Amy has been such a wonderful addition to my room. It’s so nice to send kids to her that need some one-on-one with a particular concept or send a couple to work in a group. I have also sent my high kiddos to expand on what we were learning about and play a higher level game, the others couldn’t quite do yet. I have also been happy to use her as a resource to help kids make corrections on assignments they did the day before, but missed a certain skill. I’ve also used her in the class, walking around helping me figure out who is catching the concept and who needs some extra help. THANK YOU for the extra help. Our kids will definitely benefit."

"We have a schedule worked out so that she can meet with small groups of kids consistently each week: kids who need more practice with the concepts, kids who need more challenge, and kids who are working on level."

"We are very appreciative of this extra help in math! It will be great for all the kids in our classes."

The Walking Wednesdays program encourages all students to walk or ride their bike to school at least four times per semester. The program promotes healthy habits, reduces traffic congestion, boosts our sense of community and encourages our cities to provide safe routes to school. Our fall walking dates are September 23, October 7, 14 and 21.

One responsibility of the program is to provide a Walking School Bus for students who may not live within walking distance of the school. Our walking school bus provides two bus stop locations, one at Leawood Presbyterian Church and the other at 3508 West 89th Street. We rely on volunteers to lead the walking school bus and ensure our students have a safe route to school.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing on the way to school!
