Hi ,

Precise cropping & rotation of your pictures is very important if you want to look like a pro rather than an amateur. This is particularly true for horizon lines and other visual "tells" in your original pictures.

Our free ROES Pro design & ordering software gives you fast on-screen tools to crop & level your images. You don't have to spend time working on every shot. Simply do your corrections on the pictures you decide to print.
How To Use ROES To
Crop & Rotate Your Images

When you click inside the editing window (on the central picture) two rows of tools will open at the bottom of the image. You'll see sliders that will allow you to adust your picture's cropping and rotation.

  1. Zoom in on your picture using the top slider. Use the hand tool to move the image around to get your crop. The window will show you portions of your image that will be within your print and those falling outside of it.
  2. Use the rotation slider for leveling. A small key-in text box on the bottom right allows you to fine-tune your rotation by full degrees or as little as 1/10th of a degree.
  3. After leveling you may want to further adjust your cropping.

Fine Tuning Picture Rotation
Sometimes backgrounds or other "tell tales" in the composition will show your hand held photographs to be slightly rotated.

The amount of rotation may be so small that the slider isn't precise enough to provide an exact rotation. So, ROES has a key-in text box that allows you to fine-tune your rotation to within a tenth of a degree.

Just follow these easy steps:
1. Open your full image in ROES' editing window.
2. Crop & place your image using the slider tool ( at the bottom of the image window) and the hand placement tool.
3. Level your picture with the rotation tool in the bottom row.
In this case only a very small rotation was needed to level out the "tell tale" horizontal lines of the back wall slats and the vertical doors. A setting of -.9 degrees keyed into the adjustment box did the job.
Here's what the original, unrotated (but cropped) picture would have looked like in a print.
This is how the rotated image looked when printed.
The difference isn't all that obvious. But, the result is a
more professional looking print. The cost?
Less than a minute to tweak the numerical setting.

Should You "Shoot Long" & Do Your
Cropping
in Post Production?
Pro Chris Napolitano (Braintree, MA) took the porch picture as one of fifty family portraits he shot in less than an hour. It was a rainy evening, close to dusk.

What makes Chris' approach so interesting is that he uses a Leica M rangefinder camera rather than a dSLR.

Using the Leica M gives Chris a few really big advantages:

  • He's able to take wide shots with some of the world's finest normal & short telephoto lenses.
  • Chris' camera & lens weigh only 32 ounces. With its simple controls the Leica handles like a point-and-shoot camera.
  • So, Chris can stand back at a comfortable distance from his subjects. He casually directs people with a smile and a few directions as he snaps away. His clients are at ease...and so is he.
  • The resulting photos were excellent. There were practically no blinks or bad expressions. Cropping could easily be handled in post production due to the large image size produced by the Leica.

You may want to consider shooting long and cropping in ROES with your camera.
