Dear ,

We all have our own personal reasons for getting into photography.

Our featured photographer, Les Howard, was born into it. Les' father was the house photographer at world-famous Grossingers in New York's Catskill mountains.

Les Howard

Les took up photography at an early age. He's a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT.) Les has lived and loved photography his entire life.

Today Les is a renowned professional and is the #1 wedding photographer at West Point. He shoots weddings throughout the greater New York area.

Last week Les shared these pictures with me writing:

"These were taken on the way home from a wedding at West Point. I would say that the  timing was perfect. Two days later I went back to explore some rough trails on the river level and the colors were gone."

I'll be using Les Howard's beautiful photos to offer some suggestions you can use in your own photography.

Tip #1: Taking the Long or Wide View

Pictures like this one are often taken from scenic overlooks. Getting a nice shot can be as easy as pulling off to the side of a road and snapping your picture.

Les used a wide angle lens to accentuate the scene and provide just a bit of distortion to the bridges. The river's reflection in the foreground and the bright trees on the left lead your eye into the picture.

Tip #2: Use the Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds is a technique where you break your image elements into thirds to create stronger compositions.

  • Note how the larger bridge, the distant hill and the horizon line fill the top third of the picture.
  • Les created a more powerful image by using the bright, reddish colors of the trees in the foreground to weight 1/3 of the lower left. But, instead of using a horizontal third he chose a diagonal picture element.
  • His final touch was using the river's visual flow for perspective. Can you see how the lone vertical tree above the small bridge leads your eye to the river and the large bridge?
All these elements together work together to create a masterful image!

Tip #3: Shoot Pictures From a Different Angle

Show the unexpected: We're used to seeing bridges being photographed horizontally. Les placed his running "uphill."

A diagonal angle on the bridge provides interest.
Use complimentary colors: Cyan and red are opposite colors (like yellow and blue). Here Les used these opposites, combined with the non-traditional angling of the bridge, for a really interesting composition.

Tip #4: Take Advantage of a Scene's Lighting For a More Powerful Visual Effect

This image shows how the Rule of Thirds can be combined with lighting to create a stronger photograph.

The bridge comprises the left 1/3; trees the right 2/3s of the image.
The bridge has the least "real estate" in the composition. Yet, it is clearly the subject. Why?

What makes this bridge photo a prize-winner is the lighting. The bridge is set within the far left third. But, that third is in bright sunlight, while the foliage in the right two thirds is in subdued shadows.

The strong visual pattern of the bridge, combined with the lighting, creates a powerful picture of the bridge as a part of nature.

The lesson here: Watch for changing light and be ready for that instant where the light can bring a subject to life.

Tip #5: How To Capture Pro Results Like These on Your Pictures

Professional photographers like Les Howard have some obvious advantages over amateurs. They may have exotic equipment like fish-eye lenses and a wider range of cameras.

But, there's no reason why amateurs can't get pro results when shooting Nature's beauty.
  • Follow basic rules of composition like the Rule of Thirds, perspective and lighting.
  • Take advantage of tips like these and ones in photo magazines.
  • Open your eyes to try to see the world from a slightly different perspective.
Here are a few other shots that Les took during this outing. I'm sure they're very much like the pictures you can take during your photo shoots!

Contradictions in Time: A historical reenactment seems oddly out of place in front of a modern bridge.

The color of the light and the surrounding leaves bring a special warmth to this rural church.

McDonalds as a work of photographic art? Sometimes today's kitsch can be tomorrow's historic record. Don't be afraid to experiment.
