Training Tip from Chad Mackin:

Do you think dog training has to be boring for you or your dog?
Do you think that dog training is nothing more than a series of rigid exercises?
Well, think again.
Let me tell you about “Play Based Training”!
At DePAW we believe the things the dog wants to do are the things they are most likely to do. Think about it. Most of the behavior problems people have with their dogs is the dogs are doing things they want to do, and ignoring what their owners want them to do. Motivation is the most certain way to create a reliable behavior. It’s so reliable that they often call us or other trainers to get the dog STOP doing things they want to do. Dog trainers are used to getting calls from people who are frustrated because they can’t find a way to get the dog to stop doing what he’s motivated to do.
Our training programs are built on a motivational model. Just like teaching a young child, we use game play to get your dog interested in doing the things you want them to do. The more the dog plays, the more challenging the game is, and the more challenging the game is, the more excited they become about success!
Of course this doesn’t mean the dog has to enjoy every second of the training, just like we may not like every part of our favorite sport. But the joy caused by the parts he likes will be more important to him than the boredom caused by the parts he might not enjoy as much.
Come in for a meet and greet and see how much you and your dog can have teaching obedience and solving behavior problems!
