Popular Remodel and Design Trends 2025

English Style Kitchens

The English style kitchen has a less formal feel and is known for organic colors, exposed wood, large oven range alcoves, and even country cottage touches such as hanging pans and standalone hutches. Houzz.com describes it as a variety of "collected looks that appear pieced together over time."

Fad Factor: Low to moderately high, depending on intensity. At the more extreme end you can find quirky wallpaper and flooring patterns that are likely to have less staying power.

Hidden Appliances and Electronics

Goodbye, refrigerator! (And good luck finding the TV. :) Homeowners are increasingly choosing to disguise their appliances and electronics with paneling that makes them look like cabinetry or wall space. TV screens that swing back into the wall to look like decor when they're not being used are a common theme.

Fad Factor: Low. This trend results in a cleaner look and allows for better room customization.

Curves In Features and Furniture

Soft edges and curves in home design, furniture, and decor are growing more and more popular. This style goes hand in hand with the overall move towards a more comfortable, lived-in feel.

Fad Factor: Moderate. Too much emphasis on arched doorways and rounded alcoves might make a home look dated when the "curvy" trend fades.

Natural Fibers and Textures

From exposed wooden beams to heavily textured throws, experts are seeing a rise in the use of natural fibers and materials that provide a rustic contrast and give a more organic look to home interiors.

Fad Factor: Low, as long as the finished look doesn't come across as cluttered or confused.

Elaborate Outdoor Dining Areas

The outdoor entertaining trend just keeps getting stronger. Designers report growing demand for multi-functional exterior kitchens that make meal preparation, cooking, and dining enjoyable outside in a wide range of weather conditions.

Fad Factor: Very low. A good outside entertaining area increases a home's usable space, makes it feel larger, and significantly boosts its enjoyment factor.

Backsplashes That Catch the Eye

The popular subway tile kitchen backsplash is giving ground to styles with a bit more sass, whether it's because they have more color or use less common materials.

Fad Factor: Low to moderate. Just note that anything in the kitchen that makes it harder to clean is likely to have less staying power.

Closed Concept Kitchens

The very open "great room" floor plan has been going strong for years, but now homeowners are looking for ways to create separation between the kitchen and other living areas.

Fad Factor: Low, as long as this doesn't result in a net loss of functionality or enjoyment. (For example, as long as it doesn't become laborious to try to communicate with guests while overseeing kitchen activity.)

Warm, Natural Colors

Cool colors are giving way to a surge of earthy tones, ranging from warm neutrals to organic greens, reds, and browns. Here are some examples of "2025 Color of the Year" selections:

Rain Cloud is a sample from the Sherwin Williams 2025 Color Capsule, which includes eight other colors.

Fad Factor: Low to moderately high, depending on the color and the extent to which it influences the feel of a particular room.

Trends That Are On Their Way Out

- Open shelving.

Open shelves are often a feature of English style kitchens, but they tend to attract clutter when not strictly maintained.

- Grey or white "everything."

After years of white, grey and greige, homeowners are ready for a warmer look.

- Ultra-modern decor.

Cozy, curved, and comfortable is replacing the minimalist trend that has been popular for years.
