Grill Buying Tips From the Experts
Shopping for a new grill or smoker comes with so many choices that it can become confusing fast. Here are some top recommendations from the big names in BBQ on how to make the best choice for your needs and style. At the end of this list you'll also find two great resources for comparisons and reviews.
Tip 1. Buy a bigger grill than you think you'll need.
This is a general rule that seems to hold true for most people. Experts recommend planning for around 72 square inches (8" by 9") of grilling space per person.
Tip 2. Calculate square inches using the
primary grilling area.
Some makers include the warming tray in their numbers, which can make it easy to end up comparing apples to oranges when trying to make a decision.
Tip 3. Make sure the burner area is proportional to the grill.
This detail can be easy to miss when shopping around, but it's important because it prevents the grill from having areas that don't receive enough heat.
Tip 4. Don't rely too much on BTUs.
According to the experts at the BBQGuys website, BTUs are not the best indicator of how a grill will perform. They recommend relying more on two things: the grill's maximum temperature and its temperature range.
Tip 5. Get the right warranty.
Many experts recommend a limited lifetime warranty with a 10-year warranty on the burners.
Tip for condominiums:
If homeowner association guidelines rule out a grill that has flames, find out if an electric grill or smoker would be allowed.
