 Leadership in Action!

The delegation of the 2012 Leadership Exchange reconvened in late 2012 to continue the dialogue and to identify next step opportunities and recommendations for our community based on the best practices studied in Austin, Texas. This report provides a snapshot of the program learning, delegate observations and opportunities to impact change in Denver and Colorado.

2012 Leadership Exchange Report to the Community

Last month I joined my fellow LD classmates as we piloted our class project, READ12. We are working to address the achievement gap by hosting book fairs at Hallet Fundamental Academy.

Many of us are aware of the alarming statistics: 30% of Colorado’s children leave third grade reading below grade level and children who fail to reach grade level literacy by the end of third grade are four times less likely to graduate high school. My LD class was so impacted by these statistics that we were inspired to launch READ12, an initiative that provides high-quality, age-appropriate reading materials to children from low-income households during summer break. Research shows that a successful book drive can add 1/3 of a grade level of literacy advancement for participating students.

One child, upon receiving his books asked me, “I can keep these? I don’t have to bring them back?” When I responded that he was correct he responded, “Yeah!” I was touched and it made me tear up because I take for granted what seems to me to be so common place. We have so many books around our house that I am sure, my six year old, Silas, has never responded so jubilantly about receiving a new book.

We are hosting another, larger book fair in May where each K-2 student at Hallet will receive 12 reading books, however, READ12 needs your help to make this event a success. If you are interested in donating to the READ12 project, please visit our website for more information, www.read12colorado.org.
