When the Denver Area Council Boy Scouts of America realized that it could not maintain its level of troop enrollment or grow its programs without engaging Hispanic youth, it turned to board member Mario M. Carrera, SVP Entravision Television Group, Spanish Language Stations, who is based in Denver and responsible for 45 television station affiliates of Univision. Carrera began by helping to develop messaging aimed at integrating Hispanic youth into Boy Scout programs and he was soon recruited to serve on a national committee dedicated to Hispanic outreach.

Over the course of three years, Carrera’s participation in the Boy Scouts’ Hispanic Initiatives Committee had him traveling around the country as he collaborated on the creation and implementation of a PSA campaign aimed at Hispanic youth, which was piloted by the Denver-area Council. “It was nice to see a project really take shape, but it wouldn’t have happened unless the national organization and the local organization both recognized that their own survival was at stake and the demographic changes were something they needed to recognize,” Carrera says.

Colorado in Context Receives Two Grant Awards

The Leadership Foundation is pleased to announce two grant awards for our new Colorado in Context initiative. Rose Community Foundation has recently awarded a $10,000 grant and the Colorado Health Foundation has awarded a $20,000 grant.

Colorado in Context is a community indicators project designed to raise awareness of key regional issues (education, health, transportation, civic engagement and economic vitality), catalyze increased civic engagement in order to resolve these issues and benchmark our collective progress over time.

These grant awards will enable the Leadership Foundation to develop a pilot program that will broaden our reach and engage community members and alumni in working toward solutions together.
