Power Lunch
Interested in making a difference in a child’s life?

Power Lunch, a program designed and coordinated by Mile High United Way, allows busy professionals to spend one lunch hour a week reading with third-grade children in a Denver public school. We know how critical the third grade year is for reading—after third grade, students must be able to read to learn, not just learn to read. This program allows individuals to connect with a classroom, and other professionals, for an entire school year.

The Chamber and the Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation are putting together a group to adopt a third grade classroom for the 2013-14 school year. You will be paired with another professional to devote an hour every other week to a third graders’ future success. Training is provided. Power Lunch will be holding an informational session at the Chamber on Tuesday, July 2 at 9 am. Please e-mail Mara if you are interested.

Recently I’ve been pondering the question, “What if?”  When I think about the future of the Leadership Foundation, I get this nervous excitement.  Nervous because you never know what the future holds, but excitement because I believe it will be all good. We have such a solid history of successfully delivering inspiring programming and now I look forward to the possibilities of what more we can be if we ask ourselves, “What if?”  Recent events have stoked my excitement.

Two weeks ago we hosted a meeting of past board members and Leadership Denver and Impact Denver alumni.  I left that meeting energized and enthusiastic about the feedback and ideas that were shared.  I got the sense that there is a genuine desire by many in our alumni community to come alongside the Leadership Foundation and join forces to actively impact community challenges.  What if....

Then, last week we celebrated the 39th class of Leadership Denver or “LD one three, best class ever—trademark” as class speaker Andy Seth calls it.  The class raised a record amount for the emerging scholars fund surpassing their own goal and contributing $20,400—opening access to our programming for others.  Their creativity in harnessing the class’ enthusiasm for the program has established a model that we will share with future classes. What if...

And, now we have begun interviewing 136 prospects for the 40th class of Leadership Denver.  The 60 individuals that will be selected for Leadership Denver class of 2014 bring new ideas, new energy and new passions to impact community.  What if...

So, all of these things have caused me to ponder excitedly about the future possibilities of the Leadership Foundation, our work, and the future impact of our community of civic leaders.  What if we harnessed the collective energy of our alumni community? How might we impact our region’s challenges and create a better and stronger community for all? What if? The possibilities are endless if we just ask ourselves “What if?”

Congratulations, Leadership Denver Class of 2013!

On Friday, June 7, Leadership Denver’s class of 2013 celebrated its graduation at the McNichols Building. The graduation ceremony featured keynote speaker, State Senator Michael Johnston, who spoke about his time as a teacher and being inspired by his students to seek out a role where he could make a change. After the ceremony, more than 150 alumni and friends of the Leadership Foundation gathered for the Annual Alumni Reception.

Thank you to all the sponsors who made the 2013 Leadership Denver program possible, including Boettcher Foundation, US Bank, Mortenson Construction, Comcast, Greenberg Traurig, LLP, Denver Broncos Football Club, Rebound Solutions, Morrison & Foerster, Kaiser Permanente, Craig Hospital and UMB Bank.

Leadership Foundation:
What was your Leadership Denver '12 class project?

Hollis: Inspired by the statewide efforts on early childhood literacy, Read12 was created by the Leadership Denver Class of 2012.  Read12 provides every student in the kindergarten, first and second grade of select schools with 12 summer reading books.  The students are able to choose the books during a Read12 sponsored book fair and Read12 picks up the bill.   Our rational for the project was in part based on a study by The Coalition for Evidence Based Research, a non-partisan non-profit, which showed that if a child had access to a well-run book fair before an extended school break (like a summer or winter break), the intervention can add 1/3 of a grade level of literacy advancement for participating students.
