Community Needs Spotlight:
Denver Public Schools Office of Community Engagement and AmeriCorps

Ramon Bargas, a Leadership Denver 2010 graduate, would like to share an opportunity to volunteer for a Denver Public Schools summer camp that will be taking place June 10-28.

Denver Public Schools Office of Community Engagement and AmeriCorps program are hosting a three week summer camp for elementary students. Power Punch! camp will provide a structured environment focused on literacy and enrichment activities, serving students who would not otherwise have productive summer opportunities.

Volunteers are needed to spend 1-3 hours working with 3rd and 4th grade students. If interested in volunteering or hearing more about the program, please contact Michelle Saab by May 28th.

At this year’s Celebrating Civic Leadership Luncheon, Ramon was featured for his ability to be a leader and inspire action in the community.

Get involved:

1. Join a Community Engagemnet Team to develop curriculum and experiences that link middle school and high school students to careers and educational pathways in Colorado's high growth industry sectors.

2. Mentor a Career & College Intensive Class, volunteer to provide mock interviews, or review student resumes.

3. Sponsor the Entrepreneurial Curriculum giving students opportunities to develop their own businesses, pitch their products and receive venture funding to go to market.

Left foot, right foot, breathe in…breathe out.  These words, shared by Luis Benitez during his keynote speech at our recent Celebrating Civic Leadership Luncheon, remind me that as leaders we must stay focused on the end goal.   As leaders committed to improving our community and impacting lives, this focus encourages us to press on even when it appears that the end goal keeps shifting. This week, LD 2013 winners of this year’s Best Class Ever challenge will spend time with Luis learning more of his leadership lessons.

We did it!  You did it! Thank you for helping us meet the challenge offered by DaVita Healthcare Partners.  Through your generosity we were able to raise an additional $10,400 to match DaVita’s $10,000 gift.  All proceeds will be used to provide scholarships for those interested in participating in our programs. Your support helps to increase access to our programs, helping us stay true to our vision of inspiring our community of diverse leaders to improve Colorado.

Previously, I’ve shared with you Vision 2017, which identified the strategic priorities of Growth, Impact, Visibility and Engagement.  Through our strategic priority of “Engagement”, we will create pathways of continued civic engagement and leadership development for alumni and new stakeholders and leaders.  To help us make significant headway in the area of engagement, I’m pleased to introduce our newest team member, Jenna Farley, LD’03.  Jenna is our new Program Manager for Alumni Engagement. Please stay tuned as we seek your input on how we can better serve you in your civic leadership journey.

Be inspired,
Tameka Montgomery

Alumni Spotlight Interview
Kathryn Harris (LD '12)

Name: Kathryn Harris
Position: Senior Associate for Development, Rocky Mountain Region
Organization: Generation Schools Network

Leadership Foundation:
Why did you choose to participate in Leadership Denver?

Kathryn Harris:
I had recently moved to Denver from Winter Park and had very few contacts in Denver. I was working for Rose Community Foundation and was immersed in the challenges and opportunities facing metro Denver in the areas of education, health, aging and early childhood development. I wanted to learn more and get engaged in my new community. Leadership Denver was the perfect fit.
