Alumni Spotlight: Marla Williams
Marla Williams (LD '95, LEX)

After graduating from Harvard Law School, Marla Williams traded Boston for Denver, choosing to relocate to the Mile High City over San Francisco and Seattle so that she could pursue a career in natural resource law at Holme Roberts & Owen (now Bryan Cave HRO). Williams spent 17 years working in the oil and gas industry before she came to a fork in her professional path that ultimately led her to her current position of president and CEO of Community First Foundation.

“It’s one of those things where you practice law, you’re successful, and you make partner, but then you ask, ‘What now?’ and you start looking for your next big adventure,” Williams says. “I had been thinking a lot about how I was financially able to take a pay cut and consider things I might not have looked at earlier in my career. I wanted to do something where I felt like I could make a real difference.”

For more than 38 years, the Leadership Foundation's flagship program, Leadership Denver, has been giving Colorado's civically-minded leaders the knowledge and connections needed to guide the state's future. Over an 11-month period, 55 representatives from the public, private and nonprofit sectors meet monthly to discuss Colorado's challenges and issues, and they are exposed to an interactive curriculum that provides an insider's perspective on subjects such as economic development, education, healthcare, crime and justice, politics, and poverty.
