UN Commission on the Status of Women – Women’s Empowerment
The 60th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) was held March 14-24, 2016 in New York. I had the opportunity to attend and share the experience with Dominican Sisters International (DSI) and Dominican Sisters from the United States.

Racine Dominicans – Shorelight Memory Care Now Open
The Shorelight Memory Care at Siena in Racine, Wisconsin officially opened on April 1st with its first residents moved in on April 4th. The residence provides support and nursing care for older adults with memory challenges.

Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose Dedicate LEED Gold Building
On March 19, 2016, donors, friends, and community members were invited to bless the newly completed Dominican Center and St. Joseph Residence of the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose. The new building has a 36-unit residence for sisters, with community arts and exercise rooms. “Design and construction decisions supported the congregation’s application for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the US Green Building Council as a Gold building.”

Dominican Sisters of Sparkill Elect New Leadership
The Dominican Sisters of Sparkill completed their Chapter last week and a new leadership team has been elected. The new team, who will take office in July, includes: Sr. Mary Murray, President; Leadership Team Members Sr. Margaret Palliser; Sr. Irene Ellis; Sr. Eileen Gannon, and Sr. Grace Hogan.

In March, Veritas Volunteers of St. Mary’s Dominican High School served at the annual Chef’s Charity for Children. The event benefits St. Michael’s Special School.

Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa – ‘Climate Change at the End of Your Fork’ Retreat
On Saturday, April 23rd, from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., the Sinsinawa Mound will hold a retreat in honor of Earth Day “to explore the intersections of our faith, the food we eat, and the reality of climate change.” Registration deadline is April 18th and the fee is $25.

Dominican Sisters of Peace – “‘If Nuns Ruled the World,’ Love Would Prevail”
On March 14, 2016, the Dominican Sisters of Peace were joined with students and alumni from Ohio Dominican University’s Panthers for Peace to start their four-part book club of Jo Piazza’s book, If Nuns Ruled the World. Author Jo Piazza attended the first meeting and shared her inspiration from the book that “[i]f nuns ruled the world, truth, justice, and love would prevail.”

Saint John’s Bible Exhibited at Mariandale Retreat and Conference Center
During Easter weekend, the Heritage reproduction edition of the original St. John’s Bible was on loan and displayed for guests at Mariandale Retreat and Conference Center; and on Monday, March 28th, the bible was open to the public to view. The bible was loaned from the Kaplan Family Library and Learning Center.

‘Music for a Jubilee Year of Mercy, Celebrating 800 Years of Dominican Presence in the World’
The Shem Center for Interfaith Spirituality invites the Dominican Family to its annual gala concert of classical music on Sunday, May 1st at 3:00 p.m. The gala is dedicated to the Jubilee Year of Mercy and the 800th Dominican Jubilee Year. “Laudare, Benedicere, Praedicare,” will be featured as an instrumental piece in the concert.

Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa – Tristate Choral Society Spring Concert
On Sunday, April 24th at 2:00 p.m., the Tristate Choral Society Spring Concert will be held at Sinsinawa Mound. The concert’s theme is “Requiem, Rebirth, and Renewal,” and the choir will be directed by Steven Grives.

Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids – ‘Dominican Crosses Blessed’ by Sisters
In honor of the 800th Anniversary of the Dominican Order, the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids began a cross painting project in January. The cross painting project is also to “extend blessings to the lay people and Sisters who are cared for at the rehabilitation center on Marywood Campus.” The crosses are to be hung in the rooms at Marywood Health Center.

New Book, “St. Dominic: The Story of a Preaching Friar,” by Donald J. Goergen, O.P.
Paulist Press has published Dominican priest, Donald Goergen, O.P.’s new book St. Dominic: The Story of a Preaching Friar in honor of the 800th Anniversary of the Order of Preachers. The book revisits the life of St. Dominic.
