Dominican Sisters of Peace: ‘Children Participate in Second Annual Peace Camp’
In June the Peace Center hosted the second annual Peace Camp for nineteen children, ages 7-10. The camp is for children “who would not have been able to have a camp experience because of economic circumstances.” The campers were accompanied by Dominican Sisters Suzanne Brauer, O.P., Pat Thomas, O.P., and Ceal Warner, O.P., along with volunteer counselors.
Racine Dominicans – Finding Sanctuary at Bethany Apartments
Bethany Apartments and its programs have been serving the Racine County for 25 years as a place “where domestic abuse victims could find sanctuary and time to rebuild their lives.” Sister Evelyn Lins is one of several Racine Dominicans who founded the apartments.
Maryknoll Mission Institute Program – ‘Embodying the Option for the Poor’
The Maryknoll Mission Institute is hosting the program, “Embodying the Option for the Poor,” from July 17-22, 2016. The program will be presented by Maria Teresa Davila, PhD, a professor of Christian Ethics at Andover Newton Theological School. The registration fee is $50 and tuition is $200.
Sinsinawa Dominicans – ‘Gratitude Event and Installation: Sisters Accept Call to Serve’
On June 25, 2016, the installation ceremony for the Sinsinawa Dominicans’ new Prioress and Council was held. “All those present pledged their love and prayers to help the Sisters preach, search for truth, and work toward building a holy and just Church and society.”
Faith and Film – Finding Dory
Finding Dory is the sequel to the 2003 Pixar animation film Finding Nemo. The film is about Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres), the blue tang fish with short term memory loss from Finding Nemo. In the film, Dory, who was separated from her parents, is on a quest to find her way home.
Dominican Sisters of Sparkill – ‘New Leadership Team to Guide the Sparkill Community into the Future’
On June 25, 2016, the installation of the new leadership for the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill was held. The transfer of leadership was celebrated at the Dominican Convent in Sparkill with Mass and a luncheon.
Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville – ‘UJIMA Interns Visit Homecoming Farm’
On June 28, interns of UJIMA, a program from the Town of Babylon, visited Homecoming Farm. They learned about the farm and the ways farming life connects people to the Earth.
Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville – ‘Summer Camp in Puerto Rico’
In June, the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville in Puerto Rico held a summer camp for the children of the Public Housing Virgilio Davila. This year, a new recognition trophy was introduced in honor of Sr. Ana Maria Adrover, founder of the program.
Sinsinawa Dominicans – ‘Sister Joeann Daley Showcases New Art Form in Upcoming Show’
From August 4-September 28, 2016, at the Sinsinawa Art Gallery, Sister Joeann Daley, O.P. will be featured in “The Evolution of the Artistic Imagination.” The “exhibit traces the evolution of this artist’s creative life, beginning with Sister Joeann’s 2010 jubilee celebration of 50 years as a Sinsinawa Dominican sister and spiraling back through the places where she has lived and worked.” The opening reception will be held on Sunday, August 7, 2016, from 1-3 p.m.
‘New General Council Takes Office for Adrian Dominican Sisters’
On July 2, 2016, the new Prioress (Sr. Patricia Siemen, O.P.) and General Council (Sr. Frances Nadolny, O.P.; Sr. Mary Margaret Pachucki, O.P.; Sr. Patricia Harvat, O.P.; and Sister Elise D. García, O.P.) of the Adrian Dominican Sisters took office. The transition took place during a special liturgy for the Celebration of Leadership.
Nine-Day Novena in Solidarity with our Dominican Family in Iraq
A novena has been prepared by the Iraq Coordinating Committee “to remember our Dominican Family that fled for their lives when Daesch (ISIS) swept across the Nineveh Plain with violence.” The novena will begin on July 29, 2016 and end August 6, 2016.
