Dominican Sisters of Sparkill: ‘Haiti Mission Team Departs for 2017 Trip’
On May 25, 2017, Sparkill’s Haiti Mission Team (two Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, one Dominican Sister of Caldwell, and a friend) departed for their 2017 trip to Haiti. During this trip, the team will be “checking the status of [their] building projects and water wells, training local community leaders who will run this summer's kids' camp in the town of Cuvier, delivering medicine and hygienic supplies, and assessing hurricane relief progress.”
Dominican Sisters of Adrian: Dominican Retreat, “In the Beginning was the World”
From July 9-16, 2017, the Weber Retreat and Conference Center will hold the retreat “In the Beginning was the World.” The retreat will focus on scripture and preaching, and the retreat team includes: Sister Megan McElroy, OP; Father Brian Pierce, OP; Sister Theresa Rickard, OP; Father Cristóbal Torres Iglesias, OP; Sister Rebecca Gemma, OP, liturgist; and Sister Joyce LaVoy, OP, musician.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the sequel to the 2014 superhero movie Guardians of the Galaxy. In the sequel, the film’s hero Peter Quill (a.k.a. Star-Lord), along with his fellow Guardians: Gamora, Drax, Groot (now Baby Groot), and Rocket, take on a new adventure and discover Quill’s true parentage.
Heartland Center for Spirituality: Theology Institute, Integral Ecology
From July 21-25, 2017, the Heartland Center for Spirituality will hold a Theology Institute, Integral Ecology, with Linda Gibler, OP. The Theological Institute “will explore what the Earth, Laudato Si’, and our Dominican tradition might be asking of us.”
Maryknoll Mission Institute Upcoming Programs
The Maryknoll Mission Institute has two upcoming programs. The program “Structures of Sin and Personal Conversion Towards Social Transformation” will be held June 18-23, and the program “Ecowomanist Wisdom: Embracing Spiritual Rest & Active Contemplation” will be held July 9-14. Dominican Youth Movement, USA Forges Ahead as College “Preaching in Action” Conference Celebrates its 15th Year
“During the week of May 23, 2017, thirty five students from Dominican Universities/Colleges or colleges with a Dominican presence gathered at Molloy College, Rockville Centre, NY for the 15th National ‘Preaching in Action’ Conference.” The conference allowed the students “to learn about the Dominican charism of preaching and how that charism can be introduced into their own lives and passed on to others.”
Dominican Sister of Blauvelt Beryl Herdt, O.P. Awarded St. John’s University Pietas Medal
On June 3, 2017, Blauvelt Dominican Sister Beryl Herdt, OP, was awarded the Pietas Medal from St. John’s University. Sister Beryl graduated from St. John’s University in 1967 with her PhD.
