Dominican Sisters of Springfield Welcome 29 New Associates
On May 15, 2016, the Dominican Sisters of Springfield welcomed 29 new associates. The class of 2016 is one of the largest associate classes in the recent years and the group comes from Illinois and Missouri.
Maryknoll Mission Institute Program, ‘Awakening the Heart, Mending the World: Merton’s Path to Mercy’
From June 26-July 1, 2016, Maryknoll Mission Institute will offer the program, “Awakening the Heart, Mending the World: Merton’s Path to Mercy, with Christine Bochen. The registration fee is $50 and tuition fee is $200.
National Catholic Register – ‘Dominicans at 800 Years Old: Order Committed to Preaching Piety’
A recent article in the National Catholic Register, “Dominicans at 800 Years Old: Order Committed to Preaching Piety,” highlights what U.S. members of the Order of Preachers have to say about the 800th Jubilee.
‘Dominican Novices from Denver Visit Dominican Sisters of Peace’
The Dominican Sisters of Peace were visited by the Dominican novices from the Central Province Novitiate in Denver and their Director, Fr. Bob Keller. The Dominican novices visited at the Motherhouse in Great Bend, KS, where they joined the sisters’ celebration for the 800th anniversary of the Order of Preachers.
Dominican Friar’s Documentary Wins 2016 Silver Palm Award
Friar Armando P. Ibañez, O.P.’s documentary, “South Texas Gentle Men of Steel – Los Padres,” recently won the 2016 Silver Palm Award at the Mexico International Film Festival. The award is another impressive achievement the documentary has been recognized for.
Dominican Institute for the Arts – Works of Art Portray the Issues of Justice and Peace
Recently, the Dominican Institute for the Arts (DIA) asked for art work to be submitted on the Issues of Justice and Peace. “There are works on poverty, racism, water and climate issues, oil, migration, health, trafficking and more.” DIA invites all to visit their website to see the works of art that were submitted.
Faith and Film: Love and Friendship
Love and Friendship is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s novella Lady Susan. The film is about Lady Susan Vernon, a recent widow who is looking for a husband for both herself and her daughter.
Dominican Sister of Blauvelt Mary Doris, O.P. Helps Homeless, Single Mothers at Siena House
For 26 years Siena House in the Bronx, New York, has been serving the needs of homeless, single mothers and their children. Sr. Mary Doris, O.P., a Blauvelt Dominican, is Director of Siena House—a shelter for women who are pregnant or have a child under the age of three. Sr. Mary and several other Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt founded the shelter in 1990.
‘Irish Priest O’Murchu to Give Retreat, Lecture at Sinsinawa’
From June 28-30, 2016, Irish Priest Diarmuid O’Murchu will give a retreat, “Inclusivity: A Gospel Mandate,” and lecture at Sinsinawa Mound. The retreat will be held from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. each day and the fee is $234 for an overnight guest and $157 for a commuter. Registration deadline is June 21st. On June 29, a lecture will be given at 7:00 p.m., and will be open to the public.
Aquinas Literacy Center – Sr. Pat McKee, O.P. Teaches English Using a SmartBoard
Sr. Pat McKee, O.P., an 80-year-old Adrian Dominican sister, uses a SmartBoard at Aquinas Literacy Center to teach English. Sr. Pat began using a SmartBoard ten years ago. The SmartBoard engages students and provides hands-on-learning.
Dominican Youth Movement – Dominican College ‘Preaching in Action’ Conference Celebrates its 14th Year
During the week of May 24, 2016, thirty students from Dominican Universities/Colleges gathered at Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan for the fourteenth National “Preaching in Action” conference. The young adults went to “learn about the Dominican charism of preaching and how that charism can be incorporated into their own lives and passed on to others.”
Dominican Sisters of Caldwell Present 2016 Peace Award
On June 3, 2016, the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell presented the 2016 Peace Award to Dr. James P. Morgan of Montclair, New Jersey during a Vesper Prayer Service. Dr. Morgan is the chosen recipient for his “charitable commitment to the poorest of the poor over the span of his professional career as a medical physician.”
Sinsinawa Dominicans – Fr. Don Goergen, O.P. to Speak at Sinsinawa
Continuing their celebration of the 800th Jubilee of the Order of Preachers, the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters will host a Jubilee lecture, “The Charism and Legacy of Dominic,” by Don Goergen, O.P. on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. The focus of the lecture will be Don Goergen, O.P.’s latest book, St. Dominic: The Story of a Preaching Friar. There will be a book signing at 12:30 p.m. before the lecture begins. The event is free and open to all.
