On February 20th at the annual Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (TCADP) Conference in Houston, Texas, the Dominican Sisters of Houston were presented the David P. Atwood Founder’s Award. The award was established in 2010 in honor of David Atwood, founder of TCADP. The sisters are longtime supporters of TCADP and have made a lifelong commitment to justice.

‘Racine Dominicans Honor Women of the Year’

On Sunday, March 6th, in celebration of Women’s History Month, the Racine Dominicans honored two local women, public defender Jennifer Bias and justice advocate Elaine Kinch, as “Women of the Year.” Since 2005, the Racine Dominicans have presented the award annually to recognize the outstanding work of local women.

Risen tells the story of the Roman military Tribune Clavius. Clavius is ordered by Pontius Pilate to watch the crucifixion of Jesus, and later is ordered to find the body of Jesus after the tomb is found empty on Easter Sunday. The film covers the days following the crucifixion and Clavius’ search for the body, “which sends him into a crisis of faith.”

A 24-hour tour of four tri-state area convents will be held from Friday, April 22 at 5 p.m. to Saturday, April 23 at 6 p.m. The tour provides those interested in becoming a religious sister an inside look at religious life. Participants will be accompanied by Dubuque-area sisters and share in religious life through praying, dining and storytelling.

Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids – ‘Nursing Students Start Clinical Rotation at Marywood’

A clinical rotation for Grand Rapids Community College nursing students, taught by Sr. Chris Wood, O.P., began on March 1st. For their clinical rotation, nursing students will work with the Sisters and lay guests who live or are receiving care at Aquinata Hall, Marywood Health Center and Marywood House.

‘Adrian Dominican Sisters Elect Leadership, Set Direction for Next Six Years’

From February 18-26, 2016, the Adrian Dominican Sisters held their General Chapter where they elected new leaders and set their direction for the next six years. The newly elected leaders, who will take office on July 1st, are: Sister Patricia Siemen, O.P., Prioress-Elect; Sister Mary Margaret Pachucki, O.P., Vicaress/General Councilor-Elect; Sister Patricia Harvat, O.P., General Councilor-Elect; and Sister Elise D. García, O.P., General Councilor-Elect.

St. Mary’s Dominican High School – ‘Mission Trip Brings Authentic Happiness and Appreciation’ |

During their mid-February break, 22 members of St. Mary’s Dominican High School traveled to Baní, in the Dominican Republic, to help the preschool to high school students of Espíritu Santo School. Also during their mission trip, the members visited the neighborhoods of Baní and the sick.

The “Women Bearing Gifts” weekend retreat at Mariandale will be held from Friday, April 29 to Saturday, May 1, 2016. The retreat allows “women to once again affirm and celebrate their own giftedness.” Women have the chance to take a break from their everyday lives to reflect and share.

From May 22-27, 2016, the Maryknoll Mission Institute will offer the program, “Living Into Death – Dying into Life” with Peter C. Phan, a native of Vietnam and a priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas, Texas. The program focuses on “the ‘Last Things’ (in Latin:
De Novissimis), that is, the realities occurring in the afterlife, namely, judgment, purgatory, hell, heaven, the resurrection, and the consummation of the world.”
