Dominican Sisters of Adrian: ‘Associate’s Article on Sister Ann Joachim Published in Michigan History Magazine’
Adrian Dominican Associate Arlene Bachanov wrote an article, “‘Sister Cannonball’: The Nun Who Shook up Adrian,” that was published in the May/June issue of Michigan History. “The article details the amazing life of Sister Ann Joachim before and after she entered the Congregation and her influence on society.”
The Lost City of Z
The Lost City of Z tells the true story of the early 20th Century British explorer Percy Fawcett. The film opens with Fawcett traveling to South America “to chart the disputed boundary between Brazil and Bolivia.” During Fawcett’s expedition into the Amazon, he gains an admiration for the indigenous people and “hears rumors of a fabulous lost city of Z, which he is determined to find.”
Bringing Light to the World: New Documentary in the Making about the Two Historic Dominican Congresses held in Rome and Salamanca
"A new documentary, entitled Bringing Light to the World, about the two historic Dominican congresses—one held in Rome earlier this year and the other in Salamanca in 2016—has been launched by an award-winning Dominican filmmaker." The new documentary "will include interviews with the Master of the Order, Bruno Cadore, O.P, former Master of the Order, Timothy Radcliffe, O.P., Dominican delegate to the United Nations, Mike Deeb, O.P., and a number of other Dominicans who were involved in the congresses."
Dominican Volunteers USA 2017 Annual Celebration
On April 22, 2017, Dominican Volunteers USA (DVUSA) celebrated its annual celebration of Praedicare: Set the World on Fire. At the celebration, Dominican Volunteer Kayla Grodzicki “reflected on her experience as a Dominican Volunteer serving at Sarah's Inn and living in the House of Connections community in Chicago;” and “Sister Bernadine Karge received the Marcella Connolly, OP Leadership Award for her outstanding work as a lawyer in the field of immigration and justice.”
‘Dominican Sisters of Peace Commemorate Site of Underground Railroad’
“Representatives of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, Ohio Dominican University, the Columbus Recreation & Parks Dept., and the Friends of Freedom Society gathered on April 20, 2017 to dedicate a historical marker commemorating the importance of Alum Creek and other Central Ohio tributaries as routes used by escaped slaves during the Underground Railroad.”
Dominican Sisters of Sparkill Promote Rights of Immigrants and Workers at Local May Day Rally
On May 1, 2017, Dominican Sisters of Sparkill and friends “joined over 100 local residents for a rally in Nanuet, NY . . . in support of the rights of workers, immigrants and all people.” The May Day Rally was “organized by the Rockland Immigration Coalition and co-sponsored in part by the Sisters' ministry One to One Learning, Inc.”
Dominican Sister of Grand Rapids, Katrina Hartman, OP Honored with Dominican Spirit Award by Catholic Central High School
On April 25, 2017, Sister Katrina Hartman, OP was honored with the Dominican Spirit Award at Catholic Central High School. “Sister Katrina has dedicated her life to teaching science.” She was a chemistry teacher at Catholic Central High School and then a chemistry professor at Aquinas College for 30 years.
New York Dominicans Organized Sister Rally to the People’s Climate March in Washington, D.C.
A recent article features Dominican Sister of Blauvelt Ceil Lavan, OP and the sister rally to the people’s Climate March in Washington, D.C. that took place in White Plains on April 29, 2017. Sister Ceil was the march organizer.
