Dominican Sisters of the Roman Congregation Elect Leadership Team
The Dominican Sisters of the Roman Congregation gathered April 22-24, 2016, in Sabattus, Maine for the first session of their Provincial Chapter. During their chapter, they elected their leadership team for a four year term. Sr. Therese Demers was elected Provincial Prioress. Sr. Monique Belanger and Sr. Mary Jude were elected Provincial Councilors; and Sr. Monica Dubois was appointed Provincial Treasurer.

Dominican Sister of Blauvelt Jennifer Schaaf Leads Students in Alternative Spring Break Programs to Nicaragua
Sister Jennifer Schaaf, a Blauvelt Dominican, has ministered as an Assistant Roman Catholic Chaplain at Yale University’s St. Thomas More Chapel and Center since 2013. Sister Jennifer has led students in Alternative Spring Break programs to Nicaragua to learn more about the people and assist in education.

Dominican Sister of Blauvelt Margaret McDermott Helps Provide the ‘Gift of Education’ to the Northwest Bronx Community
Sister Margaret McDermott, a Blauvelt Dominican, is the Executive Director of the Tolentine Zeiser Community Life Center in the Bronx, New York. One of the significant offerings the Tolentine Zeiser Community Life Center has is the Day Care and Universal Pre-Kindergarten where children are provided an early childhood curriculum. The Day Care and Universal Pre-Kindergarten has been beneficial to the community due to the growing costs of child care.

“Indigenous peoples account for 5 percent of the world’s population, while representing 15 percent of those living in poverty. As many as 33 percent of all people living in extreme rural poverty globally are from indigenous communities. Those figures are particularly alarming given the fact that so much of the world’s natural resource base is located on lands within indigenous territories. This is where both governments and corporations wreak havoc on the lives of people, destroying their communities and their cultures, as they destroy water sources, forests and ecosystems at the same time.”

Sinsinawa Dominicans – ‘Pope’s Call to Care for the Earth’ to be Explored in Retreat
On Saturday, June 11, 2016, Sinsinawa Mound will host the retreat, “Serene Attentiveness” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The retreat is part of Sinsinawa’s “Exploring a Contemplative Ecology” series and focuses on Pope Francis’ Laudato Si. Sister Christin Tomy and Eric Anglada, coordinator of ecological programming at Sinsinawa Mound, will present the retreat. Registration deadline is June 3rd and the fee is $25.

Sinsinawa Dominicans – ‘Preaching through the Arts’ Summer Exhibit
From June 4-July 31, 2016, the Sinsinawa Art Gallery will host the jubilee heritage exhibit, “Preaching through the Arts,” in honor of the 800th Jubilee Year of the Order of Preachers. The art exhibit will feature the artwork by Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters from past to present and artwork from three other Dominican Congregations.

Dominican Sisters of Peace Celebrate 50 Years of Presence in Peru
For fifty years, a total of twenty-four Dominican Sisters of Peace have served in Chimbote, Peru. On April 29, 2016, a celebration was held for the Golden Jubilee of the Sisters’ presence in Chimbote. In attendance were Sr. Mary Ann Connolly, Sr. Germaine Conroy, Sr. Catherine Malya Chen and Sr. Therese Leckert.

‘Friars on Foot: Preaching the Gospel . . . One Step at a Time’
Beginning May 29, 2016, two Dominican Priests, Fr. Thomas Schaefgen, O.P. and Fr. Francis Orozco, O.P., will walk from New Orleans, LA to Memphis, TN on pilgrimage in celebration of the 800th Anniversary of the Order of Preachers. They will walk from St. Anthony of Padua Church in New Orleans to the National Shrine of St. Martin de Porres in Memphis. The pilgrimage will end on June 29, 2016.

‘Library in Zimbabwe Named in Honor of a Maryknoll Sister’s Work with Orphans’
A community library in Zimbabwe has been named after Maryknoll Sister, Sr. Kathleen Barbee, M.M. for her mission work in educating children who are orphans. The Sister Kathleen Barbee Community Library had its opening ceremony on May 13, 2016.

Keeping Faith with the Preachers – New Book about the History of Dominican Sisters
Sister Barbara Beaumont, O.P. in Fanjeaux, France has recently had her book published, Keeping Faith with the Preachers: Pages from the History of Dominican Sisters. The book is “a collection of talks and conferences about the history of Dominican women given in various locations in recent years (USA, France, Belgium . . .).” The price is 10 euro ($11.33) and can be purchased online via PayPal (request instructions via email). Dominican Sisters of Caldwell and Mount Saint Dominic Academy Students Recognized for Sustainability Efforts
The Dominican Sisters of Caldwell came in first for the Caldwell Environmental Commission’s “Partners for the Planet” contest. The Sisters were chosen because of their efforts to be environmentally friendly at Sacred Heart Convent. Also receiving an award were students of Mount St. Dominic Academy, a sponsored work of the Caldwell Dominicans.
