Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt Gathered at Nyack Memorial Park to Stand in Solidarity with Standing Rock
On Sunday, November 20, the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt gathered at Nyack Memorial Park with the local community to stand in solidarity with the North Dakota Standing Rock Water Protectors to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline.
Arrival
The film Arrival tells the story of a human encounter with extraterrestrial creatures. When twelve unknown objects appear in the air throughout the world, military personnel and scientists are brought in to investigate. One of the main focuses of the film is language and communication. Linguist, Dr. Louise Banks, is brought in communicate with the aliens and mathematician Ian Donnelly is brought in to study the creatures.
Doctor Strange
Marvel Comics' latest film, Doctor Strange, tells the superhero story of Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). Doctor Strange is a “brilliant, but narcissistic, neurosurgeon,” who is seriously injured in a car accident and does not gain the full use of his hands. As a surgeon, Strange is desperate to find a cure to use his hands again, so he travels to India for unconventional treatment that leads him to become a superhero.
Dominican Young Adults Celebrate Vespers
As part of a new tradition for the Dominican Sisters of Amityville, vespers service for the month of November is now celebrated by their Molloy Chapter of Dominican Young Adults (DYA). Part of the service allowed the young adults who are to become new members of DYA, Molloy Chapter, as well as those renewing their membership to DYA, to profess their commitment to the organization.
Dominican Young Adults: November Youth Preaching Weekend
This past weekend fifteen students went to “St. John the Baptist HS to begin a weekend of prayer, study, and the forming of community. These students were the latest group who attended one of [the] youth preaching workshops.”

A new book, In Good Humor: Lighter Moments from Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters, by Sister Marie Virginia Walters, O.P., shares the “hundreds of humorous true stories told by Sinsinawa Dominican sisters through the years. From the sisters’ days as teachers at Catholic schools around the nation to their current ministries helping those in need, readers will delight in each memory shared and receive a glimpse into the lives of Catholic sisters.”
