Onion Foundation awards Eastern Trail Alliance $10,000 for Kiosk Project

2019 is the year for updating and refreshing our kiosks along the trail. With the help from the Onion Foundation and one outstanding grant application, a team of volunteers will begin the process of updating our kiosks. Our goal is to provide fresh content and maps and include local and historical information for our trail users to enjoy. In addition to our wonderful Kiosk volunteers, we are also partnering with MECA (Maine College of Art) to help with our content. We are very excited about this project and will provide updates along the way.

South Portland Boys & Girls Club, Community Bicycle Center and Eastern Trail work to bring younger people to the experience the Eastern Trail and enjoy the outdoors!

The Eastern Trail Alliance, Community Bicycle Center in Biddeford and Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine’s South Portland Club have joined forces to introduce pre-teens and teens to the wonders of the Eastern Trail by teaching the mechanics of bike repair and providing bikes on which to ride the trail.

It all began last summer when ETA Ambassador Ed Hoell expressed interest in starting a biking program for members of the Boys & Girls Club. A subsequent conversation with then ETA executive director Carole Brush led Ed, who was a recent transplant to Maine, to Community Bicycle Center (CBC) in order to learn about current curricula dealing with bike safety and maintenance. The ETA was happy to promote the many joys of the Trail to a new generation. The fact that the Trail is a mere 50 feet from the Club’s back door only added to the possibilities of the partnership. Introducing members to the extensive trail system in South Portland will be the beginning of trail activities that last a lifetime.

We received a wonderful email from P. Jones of Scarborough this week:
“I rode my bike today on the Eastern trail off Blackpoint Rd. Going thru the marsh. Two young people were sitting on side of trail and gave me a long stem yellow rose.”
We do not know who those wonderful young people were, but what a wonderful gesture!

We hope you will join us this year for our

There is no doubt the Eastern Trail is a wonderful resource in all our lives – but we need your support. Becoming a member of the ETA not only supports this vision, but also helps with the construction of future miles, maintenance, safety, and enjoyment for generations to come.
For the price of a good meal, or a family going to a movie, your membership can help us achieve our goal of 65 miles of off road trail.

Please join the Eastern Trail Alliance.
