Program in the Spotlight: Pharmacy Technician
What does a
Pharmacy Tech do? Pharmacy techs help licensed pharmacists prepare prescription medications, provide customer service, and perform administrative duties. Duties include receiving prescription requests, counting tablets, packaging, compounding, labeling bottles, and recording of drugs. Hospital duties include making drug mixtures to fight infection, preparing cancer medications, and making 24 hour liquid food.
The Edmonds CC Pharmacy Tech program includes classroom and clinical education for entry-level positions in retail and chain, hospital, and mail order pharmacies.
Career Outlook: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to increase by 25% from 2008 to 2018. The scientific advances to new drugs and increased number of middle-aged and elderly people, who use more prescription drugs, will spur the demand for pharmacy technicians.
