Who to Know

Extra, extra! A Q&A with Thomas Common, editor-in-chief of The Triton Review

The Triton Review is Edmonds CC’s independent, student-run newspaper.

Thomas Common

Thomas earned his Associate in Arts transfer degree and graduated from Edmonds CC this past spring. He plans on transferring to the University of Washington to pursue a bachelor’s degree in either biology or chemistry, and going on to earn a Master of Education degree. His goal is to teach within the public school system in a low-income district.

Why did you want to be the editor-in-chief of The Triton Review?

I wanted an opportunity to repay the support I received from the campus community over the last two years. This position brings with it both visibility and the chance to guide conversations on important and controversial topics related to the campus.

I hope to be a capable campus steward, and that The Review serves as a window for those in the campus community to learn more about others, and in turn, learn more about themselves. I'm enthusiastic to hear what staff, faculty, and especially students have to say about Edmonds CC and our efforts to keep important issues visible.

-What's the best part of the job so far?

Well, it's a five-figure income – if you include the cents columns.

Jokes aside, it has to be the incredible sense of purpose. Over the summer, I spent a lot of time thinking about what I could bring to the position, and what my goals were. Now that we've had our first staff meeting, and I've introduced myself around campus in my new capacity, a sense of duty to the student body has overtaken me.

-What types of stories will be in The Triton Review (brief explanation about the sections and what types of stories will be featured, in general)?

We will continue to feature news, sports, arts and entertainment, and opinion sections. We are excited to announce the unveiling of a new section of the paper called “Diverse Voices,” which will highlight underrepresented groups of students on campus. As many students can tell you, there is no single, universal college experience.

The Triton Review staff:

Editor-in-Chief Thomas Common
Opinion editor Ian Moffet
Arts & Entertainment editor Tara Pegasus
Copy editor Rel Konot
Business manager Justin Bisacky

The Triton Review office is in Brier Hall. The next fall quarter issues will be distributed on Nov. 28. Editorial staff meetings are open to the public. Students are welcome to attend and pitch, critique, or submit story ideas. Student editorials and letters to the editor are also welcome. Questions and submissions can be sent to thetritoneditor@gmail.com.

Meet your student representative: Lia Andrews

Edmonds CC student Lia Andrews was appointed by Governor Jay Inslee to serve from July through June 2017 as the Edmonds Community College Board of Trustees Student Trustee.

Lia’s position on the board will have a direct impact on students, as the student trustee is one of six voting members of the board.

Lia said the board members are the policy makers for the college, and “implementing a student position reflects a progressive outlook on their part.”

“Having a student on the board can offer much-needed insight into what students are actually thinking and what students are actually wanting and needing from the college,” she said.

For Lia, the position carries a lot of weight, but ultimately, she said it is a position of service.

“I’ve always approached this kind of work, whether it’s student government or student trustee, with that mindset,” Lia said.

She comes to the board with previous experience on the college’s student executive board and as an outreach coordinator for the campus environmental sustainability team.

Lia will complete her Associate in Arts degree in winter 2017. She would like to transfer to the University of Washington and pursue a bachelor’s in Environmental Science and Resource Management.
