Welcome Orientation Week

International Student Services (ISS) welcomed nearly 400 new international students from 57 different countries this September. This could not have been done without the assistance of 25 student volunteers (International Assistants) who gave over 60 hours of their time to help these new students. Students wishing to volunteer for next quarter can look for applications starting October 19th.

International Education Week

International Education Week (IEW) is November 16-20. EdCC will have a number of events and activities to celebrate. ISS will offer "Hall of Heroes", a culture-sharing expo, on Wednesday, November 18th, 1 - 2:30 PM in WWY 202, followed by an international film (TBD). International students will showcase cultural information from their country including the concept of "hero" such as: What does it mean to be a hero in your country? What are traits of a hero? Who are some heroes in your country? Tables will be set up with cultural displays and the campus and community is invited to mingle and interact with the presenters.

If students would like to become a presenter, they will need a 36" X 48" project display board and decorate their space with cultural pictures, artifacts etc. and include a portion dedicated to the hero theme. Interested students can email Kim Kraft at  kimberly.kraft@email.edcc.edu with questions and/or to sign up.

Intensive English Language Program

Partners in Service is a unique course offered in EdCC’s Intensive ESL Program. International students who take the Partners class have the opportunity to experience American culture through service learning. They spend six hours each week at a community organization as part of their Speaking/Listening class.

This quarter, students from China, the Congo, Hong Kong, Libya, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam are helping out at elementary schools, a retirement community, Boys & Girls Clubs and the Lynnwood Fire Department. The focus is on communication, culture and service. Students use English at their sites, adding a ‘real world’ component to their ESL classes. They also learn about American culture and share their own culture with the communities they serve.

The students and the organizations both benefit from this unique partnership, and the relationships formed are often very special. As one Partners student wrote about his elementary school experience: “These kids changed my life.”

Events & Activities for Students

Short Term Programs

Students from Herning, Denmark

EdCC is proud to be hosting 19 students from Herning Gymnasium in Denmark. Gymnasiums are high schools that specialize in math and sciences. These students will be on campus October 5th - December 2nd and they will study subjects that pertain to their studies back home.

Conversation Partner Program (CPP)

After a hiatus in spring and summer quarters, ISS has grouped more than 60 students into partnerships and groups for cultural and language exchanges. Conversation Partners meet once or twice a week throughout the quarter, practice English and communications skills, and intentionally learn about each others' home country and culture.

CPP Group Gathering

Conversation Partner Program also offers a weekly "Group Gathering" that invites students of all English levels to participate in games and conversation to improve English communication, general people skills, and develop leadership abilities. "Group Gatherings" take place every Wednesday4:30 - 6 PM, in the Rainier Place Community Room. Learn more at our Facebook Page or email  cpp@email.edcc.edu.

Northwest Community College Initiative (NWCCI)

The Northwest Community College Initiative (NWCCI) welcomed 19 students to Edmonds Community College this August. Edmonds is just one of 17 campuses in the U.S. to host the 2015-2016 Community College Initiative (CCI) Program. This year's EdCC students are from Brazil, Colombia, Cote D'Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, South Africa, and Yemen.

The NWCCI program is a one-year cultural exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Participants pursue educational study focused on certificate programs in workforce development fields. The CCI program provides opportunities for professional internships, service learning, and community engagement activities designed to build technical skills, enhance leadership capabilities, and strengthen English language proficiency. After completing the program, participants return home with a deeper understanding of U.S. culture and new skills to help them contribute to the economic growth and development of their countries.

If you are interested in learning more about the NWCCI program, hosting a student internship at your organization, participating in the friendship family program, or having a student visit your organization or classroom to speak about his or her culture, please contact Kim Kraft at kimberly.kraft@email.edcc.edu.
