Faculty and Staff Global Engagement and Exchange

Edmonds Community College will offer annual awards of up to $2,500 to faculty and staff to be used for international projects that will directly lead to increasing students' personal experience with international or intercultural issues, communities, or people. This would include travel to research short-term program opportunities and teaching or research abroad to enhance instructor capabilities. It could also encompass on-campus activities such as preparation time to organize class and cultural exchange between currently enrolled students, or with classrooms abroad via Internet/Skype connections.

Examples of past recipients include Emily Fissel, Spanish instructor, who was awarded a grant to travel to Guatemala and develop a program to take a group of students there for a service learning and language class for two weeks. Hanifa Yahiaoui, French and Francophone cultures instructor, was also awarded a a grant to put together a program in France so that she could lead a group for two weeks to France to study Francophone culture and language. Both Emily and Hanifa took exploratory trips before leading the actual trips this past summer.

Programs and Partnerships

Herning Gymnasium

For the fifth straight year, the college is offering a program to host Herning Gymnasium students from Denmark at EdCC. The eight-week program provides 26 Danish students with classes that focus on science, math, and humanities.

EdCC will be hosting two Herning Gymnasium faculty members on campus for two weeks in February. Each year, both schools send two faculty to gain exposure to foreign pedagogy, culture and the opportunity to team teach with a Danish counterpart.

International Transfer Fair

On Monday, October 21st, representatives from 65 colleges and universities visited Edmonds Community College to meet with students interested in learning more about their campuses, academic programs and transfer policies. Perennial favorites such as UC-Berkeley, State University of New York-Binghamton and Indiana University were in attendance along with schools from the entire state of Washington and across the United States. The Transfer Fair gave students an opportunity to talk with the representatives one-on-one and to gather information on many schools at once, directly and efficiently.

The feedback from the universities was extremely positive, with many of the representatives commenting on how well prepared EdCC students were and how good their questions were. Some cited former students who are now studying successfully at their campuses. The representative from Gonzaga University, for example, indicated that an Edmonds graduate has recently been selected as an Office Assistant in International Student Services and is doing an exceptional job. Purdue University’s Kelton Render said, “We get really good students from here. We haven’t always attended this event in the past, but we definitely will in the future!” The next ISS sponsored transfer Fair, which is open to all EdCC students, will be held on January 26, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information please email  elizabeth.lyon@email.edcc.edu.
