FNHA provides updates on cybersecurity supports for First Nations People in BC |
|
Unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations | VANCOUVER – The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) is standing down its cyber incident support call centre on December 20, 2024 due to recent extremely low call volumes but will continue to offer email support and one-time funding for communities to support members registering for free Equifax credit and identity theft monitoring.
“Our teams have and will continue to prioritize security measures that keep pace with both known and new cybersecurity threats as they emerge," said Richard Jock, CEO of the FNHA. “While the call centre has served its intended purpose, and is now being stood down, FNHA's support of community members impacted by the cyber incident will continue through email support and community grants."

The FNHA Vancouver Island team welcomes Brenda Halliday to the team who is joining us as a student in the First Nations Student Program (FNSP) |

I originate from the Sapatoweyak Cree Nation of Treaty 4 in Manitoba. My mother hailed from Swampy Cree and my father from the Red River Metis of Duck Bay Treaty 4, with both places located within the borders of Manitoba. I grew up on Treaty 6 territory in Saskatoon, SK. Shortly after I graduated from high school, I was recruited into the Canadian Armed Forces, where I spent the next 22 years following orders and defending Canada’s interests. I honorably retired in 2013 having the accreditation of 2 overseas tours. After my release I relocated to the unceded lands of the T’Sou-ke and Scia’new Nations.
I entered my Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at Dalhousie University in 2012, completing the program in 2016. I successfully challenged the National Council Licensure – RN examination (NCLEX RN) in 2016 which granted me the right to practice as a Registered Nurse anywhere in North America.
As a Registered Nurse my passions are directed towards the health of Indigenous peoples, and I am currently attending the University of Victoria to complete a Master’s degree in public health with a focus on Indigenous Health. My practicum is centered upon Indigenous Food Sovereignty which is a complex and deeply rooted issue of the First Nations peoples.
My goals are to work alongside, and with, Indigenous communities. To advocate for their health and welfare, while encouraging them to pursue their rights to food sovereignty and greater reliance upon self-governance.

Inspiring Nations Land-Based Healing Evaluation Reports |
|
A new evaluation report is showcasing how the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) and First Nations communities are revitalizing and reclaiming traditional land-based healing practices.
The importance of traditional land-based healing is important to the wholistic health of First Nations community members:
“Land-based healing saves lives. We take men that are young parents stuck in addiction and do one-on-one counselling. It's so powerful, the changes that the men have . . . That is our treatment centre, being outside. We have the ability to bring people who may be in a critical space to do the protocol, and call the spirit back. Sweat lodge ceremony, traditional songs, our healing and cultural tools, the hand drum, rattle. They are coming back to it through opening the doors of land-based healing." – Land-based healing practitioner
A new FNHA evaluation report explores how the Indigenous Treatment and Land-Based Healing Fund created in FY 2018/19 has supported 147 First Nations-led initiatives to relearn, reclaim and revitalize traditional land-based healing practices throughout the province.
