Greetings respected Vancouver Coastal First Nations health and wellness leaders,

 

Many of our BC First Nation communities have been either on evacuation alert or order due to wildfires, including Lytton First Nation who has suffered great loss in their traditional territory.

 

Besides providing you with engagement updates on Regional and Provincial topics in this 5th Edition of Virtual Engagement E-Bulletin, the VC team would like to share the latest wildfire resources to support community’s emergency planning.

 

The FNHA also acknowledges the support that neighboring communities are offering to their relatives across the province. It is in this spirit of relationship and connection that we will weather these difficult times together.

The Joint FNHA/FNHC Provincial Town Hall on Wildfire Emergency Supports on Friday July 16, 2021 9:30 – 11:00 AM via Zoom Meeting.
 

The 2021 wildfire season has arrived early in BC with devastating consequences.  A number of First Nations communities continue to be under evacuation orders or alerts.  During this informational Town Hall, the FNHA will provide an update on work with local, regional, and provincial emergency service partners to coordinate services and supports.

 

Pease note that registration for this Provincial Town Hall is open to all BC First Nations Chiefs and Health Directors, but elected BC First Nations Chiefs and Leadership will be given priority during the question period and if time allows we’ll open it up to other attendees to ask questions.

 

If you have any questions about the Provincial Town Hall, please submit them to govcaucus@fnha.ca and we will get back to you promptly.

VC Health Directors 1st Virtual Gathering – Wednesday July 21st 1:00pm-3:00pm

The FNHA Vancouver Coastal team is organizing the 1st Vrtual Gathering with VC Health Directors. The intent of this space is for VC Health Technical Leads to come together to share information, and for the VC Team to collect wisdom, advice, feedback, and guidance to further support, address and inform our prioritized health and wellness topics.

Governance Caucus Sessions Spring 2021

 

During the Spring 2021 Regional Governance Caucus sessions, you were introduced to the Governance Caucus Workbook and FNHC Engagement HQ, an online engagement platform for providing input on the engagement questions set out in the Workbook. To support your participation, click below to access a how-to guide on registering and using FNHC Engagement HQ.

 

What is FNHC Engagement HQ and Who Can Participate?

As BC First Nations Chiefs, Leaders and Health Directors, FNHC Engagement HQ is your online space to provide input on the engagement priorities identified by the First Nations Health Council (FNHC) leading up to Gathering Wisdom for a Shared Journey XII (GW XII) on September 30, 2022. Your participation helps redefine the FNHC’s mandate, thereby setting the course for how we will work to transform First Nations health and wellness over the next ten years.

The following BC First Nation community representatives are encouraged to register and provide input on the Workbook engagement questions:

  • One Political Lead (Chief, Councilor or Proxy) 
  • One Health Lead (Health Director, Community Health Representative) 
  • One Technical Lead as designated by the Political Lead (e.g. Social Lead, etc.)

How to Register

  1. Go to https://engage.fnhc.ca/ and click on the ‘Register Now’ button at the bottom on the welcome message
  2. Complete the registration form
  3. Check your email for a 4-digit verification code and enter the code in your web browser to activate your account
  4. Within 24 hours of your account activation, you will receive a ‘Member Verification Email’ from the Shared Secretariat, which provides you access to the engagement topics

DRIPA:

BC has released a draft copy of the DRIPA Action Plan and is inviting feedback on it until July 31, 2021.

 

Who can provide feedback?

 

All Indigenous peoples in BC are invited to provide feedback, including members and leadership of First Nations and Treaty Nations, Métis, Indigenous people living in urban areas, and representatives of Indigenous organizations.

 

What type of feedback is welcome?

 

The government is inviting feedback on the draft action plan including confidential comments via their website, written submissions, and meetings with provincial government staff.

 

Timeline

 

Feedback is accepted from June 11 to July 31, 2021.

Health legislation:

Co-development of the legislation is planned in two stages:

  1. Broad engagement with First Nations, Inuit, Métis, provinces and territories, subject matter experts and other groups to determine the co-development pathway.

FNHC: *Tuesday September 28th* - Gathering Wisdom for a Shared Journey XI Forum (GWXI)

Dear Chiefs and leaders, Health Directors and health leads, and partners: 

 

In light of the recent news from the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, the First Nations Health Council has postponed the virtual Gathering Wisdom for a Shared Journey XI (GWXI) that was scheduled for June 16, 2021. 

 

The GWXI forum is now rescheduled for Tuesday, September 28, 2021 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.

FNHDA: Wellness Webinar and AGM

Greetings Health Directors, 

 

Please join us on July 20, 2021 to kick off our summer Wellness Webinars!

This webinar will be facilitated by Merle Williams who is a Haida Medicine Woman. Merle has assisted individuals with all types of pain and her work is very spiritual in nature and focuses on loss, grief and chronic pain.

Merle has been teaching for over 25 years. Today, she works with many people to help them through their pain; physical, mental, spiritual. She is guided by the Creator and does not claim the work to be solely done by herself. Merle is guided by the elements within Mother Earth which serve as her guide and strength.

In light of the recent, tragic discovery from Tk’emlúps, the engagement series will be deferred to a later date. We send our thoughts and prayers to the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc community, and all communities and individuals impacted by the news.

Partner Engagement: Public Review Aims to Improve Cultural Safety

OTTAWA – June 23, 2021. Health Standards Organization (HSO), in partnership with the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), is pleased to open a public review on its new  British Columbia ( B.C.) First Nations, Métis and Inuit Cultural Safety and Humility standard (HSO 75000:2021 E Cultural Safety and Humility B.C.). 

 

 

The draft standard, which is the first of its kind in Canada, was developed by a​ First Nations-led Technical Committee in B.C., with additional input from Métis Nation B.C. It aims to create a culturally safe environment for Indigenous people in the health system, encourage health care providers to provide care with humility and end Indigenous-specific racism.

Communications: BC Patient Safety & Quality Council Welcomes Syexwáliya 

We’re excited to welcome Syexwáliya / Ann Whonnock to BC Patient Safety & Quality Team as a Knowledge Keeper. Syexwáliya is an Elder and Knowledge Carrier from Squamish Nation and a Knowledge Keeper / Elder Advisor with the First Nations Health Authority.

 

 Syexwáliya has guided the journey as an organization, particularly around cultural safety and humility, for many years now. We’re so grateful for the wisdom and advice that she shares, and we are thankful to have her by our side as we work to build a health care system free of discrimination, with relationships based on mutual respect and trust.

FNHC-FNHDA Senior Researcher, Engagement
 
FNHC-FNHDA Shared Secretariat is hiring for the position of Senior Researcher, Engagement, on a term until September 2022. This will be a senior member of the Shared Secretariat Engagement team, largely responsible for managing the processes around collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing the information we collect through engagement.  They will play a key role in getting us to Gathering Wisdom XII in 2022.
 

FNHA Data Collector

 

We are looking for Data Collectors to join our team to support the First Nations Regional Health Survey in our Community Health & Wellness team! 

 

The First Nations Regional Health Survey (RHS) is the only First Nations governed national health survey in Canada. It collects information about on-reserve and northern First Nations communities based on both Western and traditional understandings of health and well-being. This survey will be conducted primarily online and by telephone. 

 

Reporting to the Regional Field Supervisor, the Data Collectors implement the RHS by engaging participants on reserve and collecting data according to the methods requested by community leadership. This position will be part-time (18.75hr/week).
