Please join us in welcoming Maria Plantz to our team! Maria's first day will be this Sunday, May 7th as she steps into the role of Ministry Intern with a focus in Children's Ministry. She will be with us for the next 15 weeks working an average of 10-15 hrs that will flex up and down based on the programming for this spring/summer. Welcome aboard Maria! Jacob worked with pastors Robert Lewis and Alex Joyner and Hinton Avenue UMC's Trustees to install a Neighborhood Art Box outside the church. "
For my Eagle project I am making Little Art Libraries, which are similar to the little libraries around town, but instead of the transfer of books, I supply small canvases and other materials for the creation of miniature art, photography and sculptures, as well as some of my own art to start it and get a basic understanding for the community," Jacob said in his proposal. The Libraries have begun to pop up around the country and are gaining some traction, and even being featured in the Smithsonian Magazine.

Put Everything into God's Hands
Members of the Hinton Avenue UMC Choir joined former Minister of Music Elizabeth Scribner at Cedarfield Senior Living in Richmond on Sunday, May 6 to share Bob Braden's original song " Put Everything Into God's Hands" during worship there. Bob wrote the song during the pandemic, reflecting on moments in his life when it became clear that he was no longer in control - but God was. Bob shared these stories during the sermon before the choir, composed of Hinton Avenue folk and Cedarfield residents, shared the song as a musical offering. After the service, choir members reunited with Elizabeth to sing congregational favorites Total Praise and Amazing Love.
Cedarfield is one of four Pinnacle Living communities in the Commonweath: one in Roanoke, one in Williamsburg, and two in Richmond. Originally known as Virginia United Methodist Homes, Inc., Pinnacle Living retains close ties to the United Methodist Church and remains proud of its heritage while continuing to operate as a mission-driven organization that welcomes people of all faiths.

On Saturday, May 20, the Church Council will welcome the Rev. Ben Rigsby, a ministry coach and church planter in the Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference, to lead a church-wide planning and vision retreat to be held at Ivy Creek United Methodist Church, 674 Woodlands Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22901 9:00-4:00.
If you are curious, excited about, invested in, or confident in the future of our congregation and where God might lead us in the next 3, 5, and 10 years,
you are welcome!

About the Artist - Cheryl Fee
Cheryl focuses fulltime on her passion for art. Inspired by nature, she is a color enthusiast, drawing on a bright palette. Cheryl works with water colors, acrylic mixed media, and oils. Her works include landscapes, florals, still life, animals and architecture.
Cheryl is a member of the Beverley Street School of Art, and numerous online painting groups. Her work can be found locally at a number of venues and via facebook.com\gratitudeartstudio.
Cheryl was born in San Francisco and grew up in Idaho. She was encouraged to draw and paint at an early age by her mother who was a talented landscape artist, and has maintained her love of art throughout her life. After attending the University of Northern Colorado, Cheryl lived in Colorado for a number of years. Traveling extensively, she currently resides in Augusta County, VA. Her paintings are displayed in private residences and businesses throughout Virginia and the U.S.

THE TASSELL SCHOLARSHIP
was established in memory of Patrick Wayne Tassell and is awarded to high school seniors who are members of Charlottesville First UMC and have demonstrated leadership and achievements in Scouting or Camp Fire. Scholarship awards of $1,000-$2,000 are paid directly to the institution that the awardee will be attending in the coming academic year. Church Softball League
The Charlottesville Church Softball League is back in full swing this spring with no covid restrictions.
Season starts May 6 and runs thru July. Games are played on Friday evenings at Darden Towe Park. The slow pitch league is open to men and women 14 years old or older. Anyone interested in playing on the FUMC team can contact Bill Owens for more information.

For our ONE THING MINISTRY for the month of May we will be supporting a ministry of the Virginia Annual Conference called
All God’s Children Camp.
This is a weeklong overnight camp for children ages 7 to 12, with an incarcerated parent. Campers have an opportunity to participate in all the physical activities the camp has to offer such as boating, swimming, hiking, archery, music, crafts, and Bible study, along with a conflict resolution/self-esteem-building class. All God’s Children Camp provides a week of sanctuary for children who face so many challenges in their lives such as economic poverty, temporary living conditions, loneliness, low self-esteem, violence and drugs while working to break the cycle of incarceration. All God’s Children Camp is a place where children learn they are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God and they are truly ‘somebody’! This is a wonderful way to honor the children whose mothers are incarcerated and to give the incarcerated mothers the gift of knowing their children are loved.

Rain location: Charlottesville First UMC, Fellowship Hall
Adults and children will meet in the upper parking lot grassy area next to the playground for games and fellowship. Youth will also be meeting separately in the lower parking lot on these evenings next to the pavilions and having their own scheduled activities with our Youth Ministries Coordinator, Dave Breslin.
Picnic Options: Pack your own dinner or email children@cvillefirstumc.org to let us know how many slices of pizza you want. Please bring your own drinks, a blanket or chair.

Applications for Convergence 2023 are open! Randolph-Macon College's summer Youth Theology Institute on Faith and Science will be held July 18-23 this year. The event is open to students who are finishing their 9th, 10th, or 11th grade year in the next few months.
Please register by May 12 to ensure a space. Late registrations may be accepted but cannot be guaranteed.
The '23 Convergence theme is Food, Faith and Farming. We have a lot of exciting activities and experiences planned including:
- Field trips to Sophia Farm, Fitrah Farm, Shalom Farm and Babylon MicroFarm
- A special project with the Ashland Farmer’s market

The Theology of Soul Food, a speech and cooking demonstration with author, James Beard award winner, and certified barbeque judge Adrian Miller
- Workshops on campus
- Planning and helping to lead worship at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church on the R-MC campus.
Cost to attend is $350. Financial Assistance is available if needed. All Convergence campers receive a $1,000 scholarship if they attend R-MC for college.

Would you be interested in helping with communion preparation?
Help is needed to prepare communion on the first Sunday of every month and special holidays. This would involve working with another experienced team member to set-up and then clean up after communion. The set - up process is currently done on Sunday morning before the service and would take about 30 – 45 minutes. Clean-up after the service takes about 20 minutes. On Saturday, May 6, 2023, a Special Annual Conference via Zoom Webinar was held to consider the ratification of 64 local churches seeking to disaffiliate from The United Methodist Church over matters of human sexuality using Paragraph 2553 of the Book of Discipline. Bishop addresses crash into migrants
SAN ANTONIO — Bishop Robert Schnase, who leads the Rio Texas and New Mexico conferences, joins with those in mourning after an individual crashed his sport utility vehicle into 18 migrants waiting at a bus stop in Brownsville, Texas. The crash took the lives of eight people. “We will continue to work towards justice and offer dignity in the best traditions of The United Methodist Church,” Schnase wrote.
