Midweek Update
October 18, 2023
Happening this Week
Meet our Lithuanian Partner Pastor
Wednesday, October 18th at 6:00 pm
Pastor Remigijus Matulaitis, the pastor of CFUMC's partner in Kaunas, Lithuania and the District Superintendent of the UMC in Lithuania, will be visiting us next week. On the evening of Wednesday, October 18th, we will have a small dinner for those who would like to meet Pastor Remigijus.
You will get to learn what is going on at our partner church and how they and other Lithuanian UMC churches are supporting refugees from Ukraine. Our partnership with the Kaunas church began in 2000, and we have made four mission visits to Kaunas. The history of this congregation is an amazing example of faithfulness against the most severe form of religious persecution imaginable.

PACEM Winter Hosting
October 21st – November 11th

CFUMC will host up to 35 men overnight at the Hinton Avenue location for three weeks. During the PACEM Winter Hosting Program, churches and other community organizations host guests who need shelter during the cold weather months from late October through March.
Each organization provides shelter for at least 2 full weeks. While hosting, we will provide space for sleeping cots and serve an evening meal and a grab-n-go breakfast in the morning. Guests start arriving at 5:30 pm and depart by 7:00 am. Bathroom and shower facilities will be available to the guests. CFUMC was a founding member of PACEM in 2003 along with First Presbyterian Church and several other downtown faith communities. We have been an active participant every year since.
Please sign up to volunteer during our PACEM season.  We rely heavily on volunteers to make this ministry safe and run smoothly for everyone involved.

Consecration Sunday is Coming
Sunday, November 12th
Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical concept that giving is a spiritual expression of our Christian discipleship.
As part of our worship on Consecration Sunday, we will be inviting attendees and members to express their financial commitments to our church by submitting an Estimate of Giving Card. This represents our support of our churchs missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in this community and elsewhere.
Those who complete an Estimate of Giving Card do so voluntarily. Even if you prefer not to complete a card, we still hope you will attend and participate in our Consecration Sunday worship and the Celebration Luncheon afterwards.
The Handbell Ensemble

Will resume rehearsals on Monday evenings beginning on November 13th, with rehearsals also on 11/27, 12/4, and 12/11 from 6:00-7:00 pm in the Handbell Room on the third floor.
The Advent musical offering date will be Sunday, December 17th.
Advent Devotional Time!
Now through Friday, November 17th
The objects in the mirror are closer than they appear... like the date for getting your Advent Devotional turned in!
The theme for this Advent Season is "Stranger at the Door". Think about a time you were blessed by meeting a stranger, or perhaps if you perceive someone who is not like you to be a stranger. The Baby Jesus came to us in a way we never expected... He was a stranger!
Devotionals are due by November 15th. Jot down a short story, remembrance, or perhaps a poem! You can add a scripture or prayer if you choose.

Faith Explorers

Sundays at 11:15 am

Starting the first Sunday in October, the Faith Explorers class (Room 308 at 11:15) begins reading Diana Butler Bass’s book, Christianity After Religion: The End of Church and the Birth of a New Spiritual Awakening. The book is about introducing people to shifting religious demographics and to propose how communities of faith might rethink some basic issues about their identity, practices, and theology.  The thesis is that certain forms of “religion” always end, often challenged by emerging cultural forms of spiritual experience and engagement, and that such endings are usually the beginning of some new and unexpected awakening.

The Adult Fellowship Group invites you to join us

Sundays at 11:15 am in Room 208

This class recently began a new study entitled: “Questions God Asks” from the Life Guide Series (Larsen and Larsen, authors).

The book is available through Amazon, or you can contact Carolyn McGee to obtain one.

So… grab your coffee and goodies from the Portico Café and come on in!

All are welcome! Questions? Contact Pat Graham at

Women at the Well is studying The Grace of Les Miserables
Thursdays from 9:30 am - 11:00 am
Room 308
In this six-week Bible study, UMC Pastor Matt Rawle dives into six ideals found in the story — grace, justice, poverty, revolution, love, and hope — each represented by a character in Hugo’s story. As these imperfect and relatable characters interact, we can see how these ideals work together (perhaps even in spite of each other) out in the world. We will spend the first two Thursday actually watching the movie (with popcorn!) Many of you have probably read the novel, seen the Broadway musical, listened to the soundtrack, or maybe have seen one of the screen adaptations. If so, you know the power of this story. If you are not familiar with the story... sit down... you are in for a treat. This study will help us all to understand our faith and encourage us to live it out in the world today.
