October “One Thing Ministry”
CFUMC will host PACEM October 28-November 11. We can support this ministry with “to-go” breakfast items such as:
Juice boxes
Prepackaged muffins/Danishes
Chewy granola or fruit bars
Apples
Oranges
Mandarin oranges
We will also be collecting underwear for men (boxer and boxer style briefs) and women (bikini and boyshorts) that The Haven will distribute. Medium – XXL are much needed!

PACEM WINTER HOSTING
October 28 – November 11
CFUMC will host up to 35 men overnight in the Fellowship Hall. During the PACEM Winter Hosting Program churches and other community organizations host guests who need shelter during the cold weather months from late October through March. |

Each organization provides shelter for 2 full weeks. While hosting we will provide space for sleeping cots, serve an evening meal and a grab-n-go breakfast in the morning. Guests start arriving at 5.30p and depart by 7.00a. Bathroom and shower facilities will be available to the guests. CFUMC was a founding member of PACEM in 2003 along with First Presbyterian Church and several other downtown faith communities. We have been an active participant every year since.

Please sign up to volunteer during our PACEM season. We rely heavily on volunteers to make this ministry safe and run smoothly for everyone involved.

Have you been wanting to clean out that kitchen cabinet??? Now is your time to do so. To help with the push to go as “green” as we can here at CFUMC, Bread & Blessing will no longer hand out bottles of water. They have been providing coolers of lemonade, ice tea and water and it has been a huge hit with our friends. We have started to encourage guests to bring their own tumbler, and several have begun to do so, but we’d love to have some extra tumblers on hand. Of course, we always provide cups for them. |

Our ONE THING Ministry designation for September is Snacks and Art Supplies for The Ivy Creek School.
The Ivy Creek School is a day school providing special education and related services for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities in grades K – 12 from Albemarle, Charlottesville, and other surrounding counties. Items can be left in the red bins in the Welcome Center off of the parking lot.

The Quiet Center- Sundays at 11:15 in the Chapel
The Quiet Center is an after-church gathering of, and for, anyone who wants to know more about grief’s journey. The sessions are “stand alone,” to join anytime and as often as you wish, to explore the many faces of grief and to share with each other our time, our experiences, our presence and our prayers. Faith Seekers Class
Come join this adult class in room 208 at 8:45 on Sunday mornings. They just began a study called "Jesus Revealed." Dive deeper into Jesus' character through the "I am" statements in the book of John. All are welcome!

Faith Explorers
Starting the first Sunday in October, the Faith Explorers class (Rm 308 at 11:15) begins reading Diana Butler Bass’s book, Christianity After Religion: The End of Church and the Birth of a New Spiritual Awakening. The book is about introducing people to shifting religious demographics and to propose how communities of faith might rethink some basic issues about their identity, practices, and theology. The thesis is that certain forms of “religion” always end, often challenged by emerging cultural forms of spiritual experience and engagement, and that such endings are usually the beginning of some new and unexpected awakening. |

In this six-week Bible study, UMC Pastor Matt Rawle dives into six ideals found in the story—grace, justice, poverty, revolution, love, and hope—each represented by a character in Hugo’s story. As these imperfect and relatable characters interact, we can see how these ideals work together (perhaps even in spite of each other) out in the world. We will spend the first two Thursday actually watching the movie (with popcorn!) Many of you have probably read the novel, seen the Broadway musical, listened to the soundtrack or maybe have seen one of the screen adaptations and if so, you know the power of this story. If you are not familiar with the story.....sit down...you are in for a treat. This study will help us all to understand our faith and encourage us to live it out in the world today. |

A Taste of Wesley 100 Year Celebration

One hundred years ago, the Methodist Student Group on Grounds, which would become Wesley at the University of Virginia, was formed. Over the past century, the Wesley Foundation at UVA has become a space where students live into loving our neighbors through justice, inclusion, and grace.
We are celebrating all Wesley has been and what it is becoming during the Taste of Wesley Dinner on Sat. Sept. 23, 5:30-8:00pm at Charlottesville First UMC. Apart from being a wonderful evening, this is our major fundraiser for the year.
If you are an alum or affiliated with a graduating class at UVA, there will be time to connect with others who were at UVA with you. Past Campus Ministers will return to share and reflect on Wesley's legacy. Current students will share about what is happening at Wesley now. You will have the chance to give towards making a difference in students' lives through a silent auction and sponsorship opportunities for upcoming programs at Wesley at UVA.
Enjoy a catered dinner, speakers, and time with others in the Wesley community! The cost is $25 per person, which includes hors d'oeuvres, dinner, and dessert. If you would like to bring a group to the dinner and reserve a table for 6, you are welcome to do this for $150. Fund Raising Yard Sale to Benefit Children in Haiti
The Albemarle Friends of the Robert Ford Foundation will have a yard sale on Oct 6&7 at Mt. Olivet UMC in North Garden. 2500 Old Lynchburg Rd. All proceeds benefit the Ford School and Orphanage in Haiti.
We are accepting donations every Thursday morning from 9 - noon in the space above Dr. Ho’s at the Crossroads. Bring us your clean and gently used donations and we’ll turn them into bright futures for kids!
Donations will be accepted until Sept 28th. Set your GPS for Dr. Ho’s Humble Pie - 4916 Plank Rd, North Garden, VA 22959. The donation site is on the second floor in the back of the building.  Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place Oct 21st at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. This terrible disease that impacts and/or claims the lives of so many people is not going away unless we can find a cure.

Anyone willing to lend an extra hand to help in our sweet Preschool (FUMP) this school year?
The staff is looking for assistance in our Kindergarten room specifically on Mondays from 9-12:30. We want to ensure we are following our Safe Sanctuary commitment and that means we will require two adults in each classroom. Look at this as a great opportunity to work with some amazing teachers and of course some sweet children!
