Did you know? A brief history of First United Methodist Preschool.

The idea that First United Methodist Church should provide a week day preschool program was the goal of Shelby McAden, the wife of Rev. Robert McAden and another church member, Peggy Lassiter in the early 1980s. A small preschool was using one room in the church at the time, but it had no connection with the church. Shelby and Peggy saw a mission for the church to provide a quality preschool program that could offer scholarships to approximately six children from less privileged families and give them a solid foundation on which to begin their public school education.

They hired Marilyn Comfort, who had just completed her doctorate in Early Childhood Education at The University of Virginia, to develop the program and serve as the director and teacher of the four year old class. Pam VanDerbeek was hired to teach the two year old and three year old classes. The High Scope Curriculum, a developmental program based on the learning theory of Swiss psychologist, Jean Piaget and supported by research showing positive results for these targeted children, was chosen as the curriculum. Members of the congregation not only made donations towards the scholarships, but also assisted the teachers in transporting the children who had no other means of getting to and from preschool.

In 1984, FUMP opened its doors to the community. Many changes have taken place over the forty years that FUMP has been in existence. Perhaps one of the most significant is that in 1995 the Charlottesville Public Schools began offering preschool for three and four year olds and Albemarle County Public Schools for only four year olds from families who qualified. However, just as there is a lack of affordable housing today, there is also a lack of affordable preschool for families caught between qualifying for public preschool and being able to afford private preschool. FUMP’s current mission is to provide scholarships for these families and to continue to provide an affordable, quality preschool program for the community at large.
