Midweek Update: August 13, 2025
Announcements
DID YOU KNOW?

In August, 1947, a church parsonage to house our church pastor and their family, was purchased.  The property, located on Evergreen Avenue cost $12,000.  At age 64 it was in need of extensive renovation and the decision to sell the property was made by members at a called Charge Conference in March of 2004.  It was sold in August, 2004 for $450,000. Rather than purchase a replacement the Charge Conference decided to provide a housing fund for the pastor with funds invested from the sale.

We’re excited to announce that we will be celebrating the 100 year birthday of Charlottesville UMC and our 2025 Consecration Sunday on the same day in early November!

We are collecting stories to share around these celebrations. Do you have a story to share? Contact Rex at rexhickman@comcast.net or Carolyn at carolynmcgee@cvillefirstumc.org. Thank you!!

Traveling Tiny Jesus

Pick up a tiny Jesus or two today on your way out of worship and take Him with you as you travel through life! If you go on vacation, place Him in your photo! Let us see the places you visit! (Truthfully, don’t we always want to have Jesus by our side?)

Share your photos with Carolyn and we will share them here!

IMPACT Welcomes New Organizer - Will Christians

We're excited to announce that the Rev. Will Christians will be starting as IMPACT's new associate organizer this month, and that he will be working with our congregation!

Rev. Christians is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and has previously served churches in Alabama, Tennessee, and Michigan. His family recently relocated to Charlottesville following his wife's call to serve as Senior Pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

He is excited to call Charlottesville home and looks forward to building powerful relationships for the pursuit of justice in our community. As part of starting his role with IMPACT, Rev. Christians will be reaching out to many of you to find time to meet so that he can get to know our congregation better, we encourage you to meet with him.

Needed! Gently used infant clothes, sizes newborn to 2 years. Church member, Dr. Denise Young would like to offer these items to underserved Moms and their new babies! This is an on-going need so bring the items in whenever you can and we will be sure to deliver them!

Charlottesville First is continuing in a discernment process about becoming a Reconciling Church as our next step in growing as an inclusive church. We are moving toward three Sundays of voting beginning August 17 and continuing through August 31. If you have questions or want to continue the discussion, you can follow up by:

1) visiting the Reconciling Ministries table in the art gallery,
2) watching the video from our June 22 service on the church YouTube channel with guest preacher Rev. Emily Bagwell,
3) talking to Pastor Alex, Pastor John, or one of our Inclusion Team members.

The One Thing Ministry for the month of August will be collecting snacks for The Trailhead Learning Community. This therapeutic separate day school serves students in kindergarten through 12th grade whose emotional and behavioral needs require smaller classes, increased teacher to student ratio, and counseling services. Thanks in advance for your generosity.

New Study
Sunday, August 24th, 2025

On August 24th, the Adult Fellowship Group will begin the study of “ Half Truths” by Adam Hamilton. This book and DVD will explore popular sayings that sound Christian, like something you might find in the Bible, yet they miss the point in important ways.

Please join our group and Adam Hamilton in a search for the whole truth by comparing some common Christian sayings with the wisdom found in Scripture. We invite you to join with us after worship at 11:30 in room 208. For further details, please contact Hu Shaffer <huberts@aol.com>.
