While producing dozens more, Pinot Grigio is easily the most popular white grape varietal coming out of Italy with Hazel's currently stocking over forty examples covering a range of prices from $8 to $30 as well as a wide geographical swath. During our most recent Bob & Rob Tasting we sampled such a variety of Pinot Grigios and were able to demonstrate how while they generally climb in price the further north you travel, they also gain significanlty in concentration, focus, nuance and lasting power, particularly as you enter the mountainous region of Alto Adige, approaching the border with Austria. Given the more difficult growing conditions and smaller output, not surprisingly, these tend to be on the higher end of the price spectrum and we were very happy to find this outstanding offering at a much more modest and approachable  level.

The wines from the Rosso Piceno DOC, out of the Marche region, offer a mellower, softer, less astringent style than those coming from the adjacent region of Toscana, home of Chianti. While containing a significant portion of Sangiovese, the primary grape of Chianti, Rosso Picenos carry a much more significant portion ( in this case 70%) of Montepulciano the enormously popular grape from Abruzzo, just to the south.

"Deep, glass staining ruby red with a fresh and peppery bouquet, scents of roses and violets wafting upward giving way to fresh blueberries. Softly textured on the palate but with zesty acidity and grippy tannins motivating its tart wild berry fruits, which carry to a slowly fading, licorice tinted finish." - Winery Notes
