We're usually a bit hesitant to bring back a selection so soon after featuring it in our Sunday Sale. But while it's only been a couple months, we couldn't resist when our distributor made "one final, never to be seen again" offer on a large quantity of the Winzer Krems, even though we were pretty sure we had heard those same words back in the Spring. It's also proven to be an enormously popular selection with our Hazel's Community, even among those who view the riesling contained within the grape's name with suspicion.

This is a crusher of a deal that will satisfy the palate for the wine drinking neophyte as well as the sophisticate. Donauriesling is a new grape variety, developed at the Klosterneuburg Teaching and Research Centre for Viticulture and Pomology. The grape has high disease resistance and can therefore be produced in a more environmentally friendly, sustainable, and economical way. On the nose, it opens with ripe, straightforward Riesling fruit, apricots, orange zest, a touch of lemon balm, and delicate citrus notes; on the palate, it remains fruit-forward, mouth-filling, with a robust structure balanced by a lively acidity; beautifully substantial, clearly defined, with considerable depth and a fine finish. Cabernet Franc, genetically a parent to the much more renowned Cabernet Sauvignon, is one of our favorite Summertime Reds as it is lighter in body than Cab Sauv but still delivers much the same fruit profile and structure but with lower tannins and acidity. While grown throughout the world, it thrives in cooler climates, such as the hillier parcels in Friuli and is typically more aromatic and herbaceous. Cabernet Franc makes fairly frequent appearances in our Sunday line up simply because it has not garnered the popular respect it deserves and our various wholesalers end up with excess inventory which we are very happy to relieve them of.

"Hand harvested and fermented and raised entirely in stainless steel tanks. Delivers lovely depth of fruit in its complex bouquet of dark berries, coffee bean, cigar smoke, a base of chalky soli tones, and a lovely top note of sweet botanicals. Fine core of fruit, lovely soil undertow, moderate tannins and fine focus and grip on long, well balanced finish. Excellent depth and complexity.
