Planeta is widely recognized as an icon of Sicilian wine production, a family that traces its local roots back 17 generations. While their reputation is largely anchored in the premium end of the wine spectrum, like many such producers, they also maintain a line of "entry level" wines, such as La Segreta, with which they use the same level of expertise both in the vineyard and cellar as in their "tete de cuvee" selections, resulting in wines of amazing value. The Bianco is a blend of 50% Grecanico, 30% Chardonnay, 10% Viognier, and 10% Fiano, all cultivated using practicing organic standards. This wine makes us desirous for peel and eat shrimp served simply with a squeeze of lemon, plump flash seared scallops with pesto or chimichurri, and
sliced ripe pear with a dab of Gorgonzola.

When asked, one of our "go to" recommendations for Summertime wines is to look for selections made and drunk in hot places, such as Sicily, the source for today's selections. While Colorado can certainly provide the heat, unfortunately we can't supply those timeless Sicilian vistas, although these choices will supply at least part of the ambience. So lay out a table in the shade, bring over friends and neighbors, eat, drink, and talk of glorious Summers, past, present, and future. This red companion to the above is a blend of 50% Nero d'Avola, 25% Merlot, 20% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Franc, also all grown using organic practices. Your spread of food for this wine must begin with traditional Sicilian Caponata along with lightly grilled ciabatta, and sides of olive oils, Balsamic, charcuterie, shaved Pecorino, and creamy Ricotta. "Warm fruit aromas of cranberries, cherries and hibiscus provide harmony on an overall earthy, umami nose, while sweeter fruit notes of strawberries and candied blood orange and more cherries carry the palate with balanced preserved by a dusting of salt and pepper and a lightly spicy, herbaceous finish." - 90 Pts. "The taste is very interesting, almost unlike any other gin I’ve had so far. Starts quiet, warm green, herbal notes on the tip of the tongue. The middle notes are aromatic and brightly herbal. Eucalyptus and a flash of mint. Some floral notes as well, hints of lavender and summer roses. The middle we get some juniper and a touch of heat, it finishes quite warm in the mouth. Leaving notes of citrus around the edges of the palate and just an edge of juniper dryness on the edge. It fades slowly, the faint heat being the last thing to go.
