When asked for out of the way, off the beaten track, give me something I've never had before wine choices, we frequently go directly to our selection of wines from Campania, located on south central Italy's Mediterranean coast in the neighborhood of Mount Vesuvius, featuring local varieties such as Aglianico for reds and Falanghina, Fiano, and Greco for whites. The irony of all this is that the region is one of the oldest places under continuous vineyard cultivation in the world, starting with the Etruscans back in the 12^th century BC, followed by the Greeks, then Italians, but remaining relatively unrecognized. Greco di Tufo di Marsella is produced from grapes grown in the eight Avellino municipalities belonging to the appellation. The name Tufo comes from the soft, volcanic rock found all over in the subsoil of the region where Greco thrives. Fine to sip on its own while contemplating the deep past, or while munching on a bowl of pistachios with fresh sliced oranges, or dining on some fleshy poached cod.

A frequent practice with many domestic wineries, and a longstanding one with many of the most prestigous Chateaus of Bordeaux as well, is that of producing second or even third labels consisting of grapes and wine lots deemed not to be of sufficient quality to be included in the producer's tete de cuvee, or top wine. These wines sell at a fraction of the price of the top label and frequently represent outstanding value, given that they come from the same vineyard sites, though typically of less mature vines, and vinified by the same winemakers. Uppercut Cabernet is just such a wine, coming from the Napa Valley producer, Provenance and when you add in a distributor anxious to move inventory out of their warehouse, it adds up to an outstanding deal, such as this.

 A wine that definitely benefits from some time opened or decanted for 20/30 minutes, the Uppercut offers an initial boldly structured, dark fruit profile. Forward and direct brambly wild berry and juicy plum gradually yield to more complex flavors of caramel, toffee and anise with subtle mineral shadings.
